- I am a strong believer in refugee resettlement. Some of my own family came here as refugees in the 1600s. But the white South Africans admitted to the US this week do not meet the legal standard of persecution that justifies refugee status. Living under Black rule is NOT persecution.
- Wait, so “rolling back” tariffs still leaves 30% tariffs in place? Like a 30% price increase instead of a 145% increase is some kind of victory? Trump is such a loser.
- When I taught at Wits in Joburg a decade ago, there were white students who complained there was no future for them there and longed to move to the US, where “life would be better.” I asked if they had a housekeeper and a gardener and a night watchman. Yes, they said. …
- The guy next to me in the ER was listening to Spanish-language radio, and an ad came on with Trump speaking in English, telling immigrants to leave. “If you’re really good, we’ll do our best to bring you back.” Now I feel nauseous.
- I wonder if ICE miscalculated in targeting so obviously a gentle soul as Öztürk, who is soft-spoken, studies child development, and clearly is not a threat to national security. Or is that the point? No matter how upstanding you are, if you disagree with us, you will be targeted.
