- I am at the point in my life where as soon as I see someone say/imply that practical effects ipso facto prove a crew cared more or are why a movie is good (ESPECIALLY that HORRENDOUS puppet in the D&D movie) I just unfollow and mute them. It’s healthier than telling people to go fuck themselves.
- Reading ‘Cue The Sun’ — which is about reality TV. The Chuck Barris section is full of so much fond nostalgia for me. The Gong Show is absolutely brilliant on all levels — the bit where the Unknown Comic sticks his tongue out of the holes in the bag is PEAK absurdist comedy. 1/2
- Barris’ second book ‘Confessions of a Dangerous Mind’ is a brilliant concoction of memoir and fantasy. Read it if you can. 2/2

- There's never been a particularly confusing time for young men when compared to other subgroups but the desire for easy answers has always resulted in healthy markets for grifters who stand to gain from telling people whatever it is they want to hear even if it's to the detriment of their audience.

- This is actually how I approach writing superheros too, and for me it differs from the tedious, sneering nihilism of that garbage POS The Boys-style ‘deconstruction’ because it’s not intended to make the characters small and mean and selfish but broaden and brighten the world around them.

- I see they have made a movie of The Long Walk. It’s so good to see scrappy little indie authors getting these amazing opportunities and exposure. (This is sarcasm, it’s based on a Stephen King story and I find King to be the fucking A No 1 tedious old rich white man who needs to STFU.)
- An old white dude writer invited himself onto my ‘how to write a fight scene when you can’t fight’ panel. I say mine because I had been running this panel for years. I have 25 years + of training, and he was DESPERATELY offended that I — a woman — had an opinion about the topic.

View full threadAnd I agreed, yes, you can ABSOLUTELY write a good fight scene without materially knowing those things but at a certain point you might want to listen to people who KNEW from visceral experience what it feels like.
- I got a laugh from the packed room. That dude fucking HATED me from that moment forward.
- He eventually insisted that you didn’t need anything but a good imagination to write a fight scene and I quizzically asked him if he’d ever been punched in the face? Did he know what his own blood tasted like? Did he know how long he could keep fighting having the wind knocked out of him?
- I’m finding it really interesting that the idea that ‘everyone hates children’ is a thing right now (based on my SM feeds). Because I don’t know that I’ve EVER heard this sentiment in the wild? 1/4

- They should not be kept home or expected to be silent in public. But I do still wonder if framing the desire to have parents act like parents in public spaces as ‘hating children’ is just misogyny. ‘All women want is babies, so not wanting that for them is hatred of children.’ 4/4
- I do hear and see constant, endless excuses as to why parents aren’t responsible for controlling their child’s behavior in public any more. I HAVE been called a worthless monster to my face for not wanting children. 2/4
- It grieves me to say so, but I have withdrawn from the Seattle Worldcon program. I do not enjoy abandoning volunteer work I agreed to perform, but I am deeply uncomfortable with the ethics of their use of genAI to vet panelists.

- As someone who ran conventions for many years: there is a lot of ego around the idea that liking sci fi makes you ‘smart’ and therefore you can organize anything because logistics isn’t a skill.

- Isn’t it odd that entirely different narrative mediums require entirely different methods and considerations in story telling? So weird! Obviously a printed comic that runs for decades is EXACTLY the same kind of story telling as a multi million dollar movie that takes years to make.
