"Flatten the curve" is maybe the most successful slogan of the last 10 years and conveys a relatively complicated idea! The difference is that the media helped explain and operationalize its underlying message. With "Defund the police" the media did the opposite.
"Medicare for all" also requires explanation! So does "I like Ike" and "Black Lives Matter" and "Think globally, act locally" and every other political slogan ever
What drives me insane is “defund the police” was already the neutered, defanged version of “abolish the police” that the media helped push by those trying to kill the momentum of the movement but it feels like that’s been completely memory holed
All the work put into getting people to think that “abolish” was too strong, too mean, too unrealistic, and “defund” was better, only to immediately turn around and make hay for years about how bad of a slogan “defund” is because it’s too vague!
No defund is bad…because it is also too strong lmao.
"don't want things to get better unless your oppressors agree with them"
Apr 27, 2025 21:14If you consider the 80% of Americans who don’t want to “defund the police” your “oppressors” you are delusional. I’m sorry, really no other way to put it.
