- One hundred percent this. I told my undergraduates to strive for simplicity and clarity in their writing, rather than attempting to sound smart, or like an academic, and it has done wonders for their writing.
- So simple it sounds dumb, but writing got a lot easier when I began instructing myself to just say it how I’d say it, without attempting to translate into Academic. I also think that examples are often like jokes: they’re more effective when they’re more specific. It helps the reader to visualize.
📌- There is an idea I heard that English puts the burden of the responsibility on the speaker/writer, while in Japan it is on the listener/reader. A lot of Japanese humor is in situations where a character misunderstands a statement because of homophonous nature of Japanese language.
