- 🧵🌊🧪 As demand for battery metals rises, deep-sea mining is proposed as an alternative to land mining. But is it a better option? A new paper by emeritus faculty Tunnicliffe et al. warns that it could add to biodiversity loss without solving terrestrial mining issues. www.nature.com/articles/s44...
- 2/ Terrestrial mining has a poor track record, but seabed mining isn't a solution—it would open a new frontier of ecosystem destruction. The unknowns about deep-sea biodiversity make it risky, and alternatives like recycling & better mining regulations should be prioritized.
