I’ve been in quite a few and it’s definitely what it feels like.
This adaptation, whilst similar in length to the Ring Cycle, has a lot of characters and a lot of story to get through. It does not feel its length but it does feel like one hell of a musical journey!
May 8, 2025 14:39More years ago than I would care to admit, I saw the Australian Opera's production of 'The Flying Dutchman', directed by no less an august personage than Wolfgang Wagner. I'm here to tell you now, he took one of the most accessible of his granddad's operas and turned it into an absolute snooze fest.
Wagner does seem to lend itself to less than ideal productions… as if it’s not challenging enough to stage (and sometimes comprehend) there has to be a personal “gimmick” from some of the directors
