the fraction of parents reading to their 0-4 year old kids frequently has apparently fallen by 23 POINTS since 2012

Most parents don’t enjoy reading to their children, survey suggests
Report from Nielsen and HarperCollins shows that parents see reading as a literacy skill, rather than something to encourage their children to love
May 2, 2025 14:44Literally the most fun part of being a parent......
I wonder if these parents don’t think or don’t understand that they as parents will pay the price for this later? A love of reading is probably one the best things my parents gave me
oof
Smartphones!!
People are so messed up now.
I'm gen-x. My parents read to me, and my great grandmother really, really loved reading to me and read to me allllllll the time. I'm pretty sure I was an avid early reader because of it.
At least in England they realized that the so-called "Science of Reading" is a hoax perpetrated by private equity. Here in the US it's going full steam ahead based on the lies of a podcaster
😔
Sad for these kids, and their parents. Reading bedtime stories together was one part of parenting little ones that I wish lasted longer.
My kids are 21 & 19 now, but I would pay $$$$$ to go back and read to them. “Owl Babies” “Henry Huggins” “Ramona” “Betsy Tacy and Tib” “Little House on the Prairie” “Fox In Sox” “Mike Mulligan and his Steam Engine”. Every single night until they were in sixth grade we read to them. It was a joy.
Unfortunately, modern people are so retarded that we need public advertising campaigns to remind them of the importance of fundamental things such as reading stories to your child, and joining sporting clubs to foster a sense of connectedness
The percentage of parents who can read has plummeted
Well first you need parents that know how to read
Moral panic says what?
Screens bad.
I would read to my kids when they were newborns. What else were we gonna do all day
These folks don’t know what they’re missing. One of my favorite things to do with both kids. I still miss it and they’re in college.
That is sad. That was always a pleasurable time when my children were little.
