- Historians, if you must spend a Saturday in the archives, there is no better place than the Harry Ransom Center. @ransomcenter.bsky.social

- Really important essay from Petra Laiti on colonial names, problems with the term #Lapland and Sápmi. I especially appreciate the suggestions for alternative names for areas in Northern Finland that are not part of Sápmi - something that has been on my mind. Strongly recommended reading!
- I want to add a story to elaborate on this. A few years ago while in Canada, I told a colleague that I was going to visit Lapland after I returned home. She was silent for awhile before asking, "Do people still call it that in Finland?" 1/2
- I explained that the area I was going to is not part of Sápmi, the Sámi homelands, but still in the region of Finland called "Lappi." She still wondered why there wasn't any other name to use without the derogatory connotations. It really made me think. This essay addresses exactly those issues. 2/2
- This summer the biannual Nordic Assocation for American Studies conference is coming to Turku! You can now follow us here @naas2025.bsky.social for update.
- My attempt to finish a chapter draft by Christmas has turned into wiping snotty noses and reading Dear Santa approximately 50 times a day. Sigh. I got about halfway, at least. #academicwriting #academicparent
- Tänään julkaistiin tämä pohdintani liittyen Bidenin taannoiseen anteeksipyyntöön alkuperäiskansoille. Teksti on osa Suomen Yhdysvaltain tutkimuksen seuran eli FASA:n kolumnisarjaa. @fasafinland.bsky.social www.sammagazine.fi/puheenvuorot...
- Jos aihe kiinnostaa, huomenna osana kolumnisarjaa julkaistaan tohtorikoulutettava Vincent Veerbeekin (Helsingin yliopisto) englanninkielinen kolumni myöskin anteeksipyyntöön liittyen. Kannattaa lukea sekin!
- Not a particularly successful transition to Bluesky for me so far. Perhaps I can use this for writing accountability. I'm aiming to have a draft of a monograph chapter done before the Christmas break. 2385 words in so far! Let's see how far I get today. #academicwriting #acwri

- Yes, reflected in the fact this is the first time I've logged on here in over two months. I have so little enthusiasm for building a social media research profile again (if I ever properly had one). Just feels like diminishing returns.
- Hello out there! Attempting to actually start using this platform and cut ties to "the other place".
