- Cool to see this translated. Theotmar is an interesting figure because usually historians think he is not that important to Arnulf, but there are traces in the charters where I think we can see his involvement. So I think, as this letter also shows, he has a bit more of a role
- New on the blog, a century ends and a new world begins. The East Franks are ruled by a child, the Moravian empire teeters and Hungarians sweep across Europe. In the midst of all this, an archbishop has complaints about episcopal appointments. #medievalsky salutemmundo.wordpress.com/2025/05/15/d...

- Irish universities are under-funded, recent salary increases were not funded putting more pressure on budgets, there is widespread precarity of employment, research infrastructure is creaking, rarely funding for equipment repair & maintenance, and PhD scholarship stipends are inadequate etc etc

- Someone working on diplomatic could get a full article out of "concepts of 'copy'" in popular understanding of Magna Carta. Hey ho. Fun, though, and genuinely hard work to establish this,as well as great outcomes from sharing collections information online.
- To put this in perspective, current "deficit/savings need" at CCCU is £20 million. That alone has led to an enormous programme of cuts and staffing losses, and to perhaps 400 staff leaving by this year end. Labour's master plan is to hand that sort of deficit to each uni in the sector?
- Numbers crunched on a 6% levy on international student fees by @patrickjack.bsky.social. A £41.5m bill for UCL, £27.3m for Manchester, £21.8m for King's - but impact may be greatest for smaller unis www.timeshighereducation.com/news/big-uni...

- Yes - it's also hard to square against the supposed green credentials, net zero targets for unis - you're just not allowed to discuss the impact on the environment.

- I made this point in my inaugural. Lack of specialist training will mean fields like mine disappearing from all universities except the very wealthy. This has knock on effects for widening participation. 1/
- “Oxford and Cambridge will come through this OK because they have other sources of funding...But we may well see a serious contraction of humanities postgraduate research training…That would be devastating for the vibrant national system that we’ve built in recent decades.” @mcraeandrew.bsky.social

- If the government wanted to do things that were cheap and popular, doing things to encourage people to get to know their neighbours and encourage clubs would be a good idea. But they aren't, which lets us draw some conclusions.
