BREAKING: “We will be closing the care worker visa for overseas recruitment” - Home Secretary Yvette Cooper
Don’t we have a desperate shortage of care workers?
“In another significant development, Home Secretary Yvette Cooper told Sky News this morning that the Care Worker visa route will be closed for overseas recruitment”

I worked in adult social care and yes, we absolutely do. It’s a huge problem. It horrified and disgusts me to see the Labour government pandering to the right like this.
Ffs Yvette. You may think this ‘we will train our own’ argument persuades voters but it isn’t reality. You don’t have the money or the training programmes in place. The shortages are now. The care profession is in a state of dire neglect. Get fucking real and stop with the hideous cynicism.
The Labour party are now as racist as the Tory party, when will this farcical era end? they all gow out and celebrate VE Day with no idea what they are celebrating. VE Day itself was the day the war ended in Europe, it didn't just become Half Time, we need to join with people not push them away
Yes. Yes we do. The for-profit nursing homes do not pay a salary commensurate with experience to what Cheetolini calls the “home-growns,” so a disproportionate number of their staff have green cards.
Labour pandering to the Far-Right with dog whistle announcements, in a desperate effort to stop hemorrhaging votes to the Faragzis 🟥⚡️⬛️
Labour have turned out to be nothing more than brutal Red Tories.

I also want to know if they think workers in the care sector are low skilled? Because it's certainly a job I don't have anywhere near the skill set for.
This is disgraceful and all to appease the bigots they’re putting more of our vulnerable at risk from lack of care being given but also that lack of care will lead to increase of neglect and abuse as those care workers struggle
To keep on top of the care they are trying so desperately to provide
Care is one of the hardest working industries and the least funded. The government continue to loose their integrity and morals all to appease and romance the bigots that are reform and Tory voters also known as the far right
So either wages in the sector will need to rise to make it attractive costing the taxpayers a fortune and forcing some providers out of the sector, or we see increasing staff shortages.
If it was an attractive, well paid career we wouldn't have this problem.
Why are they so stupid?
"More than half of those responding would favour making immigration easier for NHS staff (62%), Care workers (54%) and Scientists/researchers (53%)"

Labour need to start doing what a Labour government should be doing. Fixing the economy. But no, it's just copying the other racist parties with pointless ideas which don't actually help at all.
Rather close the loophole that allows fund owned homes to charge £5k per month.
Homes should be compulsory purchased and run by councils.
Wonder what Nige's City boys n girls would do then?
Reform voters not only won’t vote Labour, they’ll say what Lab are doing isn’t enough. So then they will cave in some more. It’s madness. The hopes of a decent society after the election have evaporated. Starmer et al have betrayed those who voted for them in favour of Trump-lites
Come on young Brits are queuing around the block to be minimum waged care workers. I have noticed an increase in commonwealth country care workers and NHS staff In Shrewsbury and we are lucky to have them !
Cooper is cow towing to swivel eyed rascists
There is nothing wrong with the government restricting care worker visas, provided that they do successfully support an increase in the existing workforce joining the sector.
YC said there are 10k? people here, who were given visas to work in the care sector, who aren't working in it.
She said they must be 'recruited' into the roles, that they got the visas for.
These people got the visas to do care work and aren't doing it, so where are they?
I really don't understand labour, it's beyond my comprehension why they're distancing themselves from the right choices. People do not want further closing. People want to rejoin the EU.
These are massive right like mistakes that will bring them down...and the whole country with them
Yes, because they're not paid enough, and care homes are going out of business anyway because they can't cover their costs.
Increasi g employer National Insurance contributions was the last straw for some.

As a retired Rn, I can honestly say that I worked with many very competent foreign nurses. With a nursing shortage we depend on them to help fill out our ranks.
When are the amerikan people going to wake up and realize that we're heading back to a feudal society. And the serfs never got a thing out of it, and never will. No healthcare, no retirement, no nothing. You're done once you're done paying in. Forget the Constitution. Fuck the republicans.
Yes. Yes we do. The for-profit nursing homes do not pay a salary commensurate with experience to what Cheetolini calls the “home-growns,” so a disproportionate number of their staff have green cards.
That isn't the problem. It is non-visa immigrants-particularly those crossing the channel. They are trying to build disparate immigration stats without tackling the real problem.
They'd rather die than admit they are wrong. I wonder what happens if she needs care. Or help. Or anything. If care is needed, you need humans that know what to do. For other humans. The papers don't do shit, care does not care where you are from but what you can do. As human.
Why do this when there’s an obvious shortage of care workers?
I’m speaking from two very recent family experiences.
It just harms vulnerable people for supposed political gain.
Labour is damaging itself more than it realises with this Reform-lite nonsense.
Really poor.
Even if, for one tiny moment, Cooper actually thought that "British" people would want to train for care work, you have to train your new people BEFORE you shut off the supply of the old!!
Performative bollocks. I thought better of Cooper.
like many other replies (a) my parent's nursing home is almost entirely staffed by lovely patient African and Indian workers and (b) I don't understand the rationale for discriminating against health/social care in immigration policy
