"The murderer was left-handed."
"[immediately provides list of left-handed people who were not the murderer and waits for my correction]"
Unless you have reason to believe that the Jains, the Jews, Vodun practitioners, etc have anything to do with this, let's be specific in naming the problem: Christianity.
And very specifically, fundamentalist, evangelical and conservative Catholic Christianity.
Because the Episcopalians, United Church of Christ and Quakers definitely aren't the ones doing this.
I definitely agree that blaming "religion" generally is lazy.
It's lazy and it enforces a certain kind of Christian hegemony, and a mindset that all religions operate like Christianity.
For sure. So many online anti-theists are hardened fundamentalist Christians at their core in terms of how they view religion and seem to view Christianity itself narrowly only through the lens of fundamentalist Christianity—like they can't conceive of religion as anything else.
They honestly think all religious people are fundamentalists who want to convert you or see you burn in some version of hell. Maddening.
(I'm of course not talking about atheists generally, of course—just a narrow group that mostly consists of white men with fundamentalist/evangelical backgrounds).
I would love... absolutely love... a world in which people of faith use their god to make the lives of those around them better rather than as an excuse to make the lives of those around them worse.
That would be fantastic.
Please point me in that direction, because it ain't anywhere I've known.
