- This, I think, has to be where the debate should take place.

- I think that might have been more a case of his realising that what he understood of religion being inadequate. I, however, prefer the definition of 'pure religion' given in the Authorised Version of the King James bible via the Apostle James (James 1:7) The underlying spirit of it is excellent.
