View full threadI lived in Spain for 13 years. The first thing I did was enroll at the official language school for Spanish lessons. I was always embarrassed to hear other English speakers who lived there refusing to learn.
- There are plenty down in Spain too that speak and speak well. It's just the ones who refuse to make an effort than stand out.
- Column, on the prime minister who had room to manoeuvre and chose to besiege himself instead. Again. www.theguardian.com/commentisfre...
- Great article. I do wish they would quantify the harm that they see immigration as having done, so we could all see how empty the whole thing is.
- What amazing me about this is that without a constitution, there is nothing that this UKG can do to stop a future UKG, elected on 33% of the vote, outlawing abortion entirely. No future-proofing. Indeed, there are no inalienable rights without a constitution. www.theguardian.com/commentisfre...

View full threadTo be devils advocate. The EU technically didn’t even get involved. My own opinion is that in the event of a Yes vote a way would have been found to accommodate S’Land in EU, why? For all its rules/regs, the EU loves a fudge too. Key is that S’Land had to vote Yes, sadly, we shat the bed. Next time.
- The deciding factor would have been the US and defence. The only way any sort of fudge would have happened is if the US wanted to keep Scotland away from Chinese/Russian influence (is is very strategic) and pushed for it. Single market maybe, unilaterally using euro/sterling, but border at Gretna
- I mean it would be a domino on the UK side. I’m not interested in the EU adapting to make it easier for us, I’m interested in claiming rights on the UK side that forces further changes UK side.
- You'll have to make the argument. Because it's unclear how if I give you something permanent, for free, you feel any push at all.

- Without action, there would be no union, no citizenship, and no rights to defend. I really despair. There is a victim mentality in all of this, that somehow Britons are victims of what was their own actions, and indeed their own assault on us. 9
- This, and the many subsequent votes, were in accordance with the UK's constitutional arrangements. Then the debate skidded off the tracks. We didn't denationalise Scots. They were British citizens before Brexit and they're still British citizens afterwards. 2
- This is looking like the worst week for remainers/joiners since Boris Johnson's landslide. And it wasn't because of the new Pope's elevation. The obstacles to joining the Brussels system are mounting; even the medium term now looks unlikely A 🧵 𝐓𝐡𝐞 𝐂𝐨𝐧𝐟𝐞𝐬𝐬𝐢𝐨𝐧 𝐁𝐨𝐱
