the solution to this is to treat education and schooling as the pursuit of knowledge rather than a grist mill for training subservient corporate employees
“Massive numbers of students are going to emerge from university with degrees, and into the workforce, who are essentially illiterate…Both in the literal sense and in the sense of being historically illiterate and having no knowledge of their own culture, much less anyone else’s.”
this is a good idea. for english classes, the standard has always been writing like a 5 page essay which is easy to fake now with chatgpt. but you can easily change that to in person short/medium essay exams that test a similar ability to respond to what you’ve read, identify themes, etc
I don’t think we should outlaw homework, but I do think we should outlaw having homework impact your grade.
Providing students with the opportunity to do work on their own without the pressure to perform perfectly would provide a useful tool.
Homework is a waste of time. Kids just need to read and maybe draw a picture or learn a song. The old “write each spelling word ten times and use it in a sentence” is ridiculous.
This I disagree with. How can you learn to do the kind of writing you need to produce scholarship without being assigned essays to write and have edited?
