- 🌲 Around 80 citizens visited the Ulvshale National Park with the Danish Nature Agency. The ‘Forest Walk’ served to include citizens in the management. 🧠 Citizen knowledge is crucial in detecting species, observing changes in forest composition or suggesting preferred trails & access points. #Denmark

- 🐝📉 In #Portugal, the decline of #pollinators poses a serious threat to the health of nature & crops. Let's turn this around. Together with @cienciasulisboa.bsky.social, we are strengthening alliances between public institutions, research & citizens to collectively conserve pollinators 🎯 Check how!
-
View full threadOverall, these workshops highlighted that knowledge sharing, mutual understanding, and collective learning create new opportunities and bring us closer to reversing the decline of #pollinators in #Portugal. Are you involved in similar #conservação initiatives? We read you in the comments!
- 🤍 Thanks to all the participants who joined and special mention to Terra Associate Laboratory and the Municipality of Oeiras for their support in hosting these events.
- Secondly, we recently visited the municipality of #Oeiras to explore challenges and opportunities for pollinator conservation on the ground. Representatives from the city council, #citizenscience initiatives and local inhabitants took part in two inspiring working sessions. #biodiversidade
- Together, we identified some pressing issues affecting pollinators in Oeiras and reflected on a common vision and collaborative actions: 🛠️ Non-sustainable construction practices 🥀 Existing green areas covered only with grass. 📢 Difficulties to keep citizens informed and engaged with solutions.
- On one hand, we are working closely with the Portuguese government, research centres and citizen communities in the context of the #PolinizAÇÃO initiative, on a national Action Plan for the Conservation and Sustainability of Pollinators in Portugal. #abelhas #conservação
- 🧠 💪 Over two insightful workshops we laid the groundwork for strengthening existing activities and initiating new ones to promote collaborative compliance with pollinator-related #environmental regulations through #monitoring and #enforcement.

- Today, the Kouy people in Cambodia don’t give roses or chocolate to celebrate #ValentinesDay 💘. Instead, they wrap trees in saffron robes to protect them from illegal #deforestation. 🪵🧣 This is the Tree Ordination Ceremony in Prey Lang—a powerful act of resistance and reverence. 👇
- So interesting!
- It is, indeed. If you are curious about this case study, you can find more information on our web site 💚: www.more4nature.eu/cases/19.
- What's the next step? The observations are published in forest monitoring reports that are shared with the authorities and the public to drive action. Do you know of other citizen-led initiatives fighting deforestation? Share them below. 🌍💚
- 🔎 Also, discover more about the Tree Ordination Ceremony: cambodianess.com/article/saff...
- The celebration seems to instill greater respect for the trees and deter deforestation. Interestingly, the trees wrapped in red robes have even scared off some loggers.
- In more4nature we are working with the Prey Lang Community Network and others to engage over 100 villages in forest protection. Forest patrols use the Prey Lang App to document illegal logging and collect data. 30,000 records have been uploaded by citizens since 2015.
- Over the past 20 years, logging companies have destroyed more than 11% of Cambodia’s protected forests. In this context, the Tree Ordination Ceremony is both a spiritual celebration and political act against deforestation.
- During the celebration, led by elders, parents, and community members, trees are symbolically ordained as monks, wrapped in saffron robes, and blessed with sacred chants.
- 🌲 Prey Lang is the largest remaining lowland evergreen forest in Southeast Asia—5,000 square kilometers of a vital ecosystem. It’s home to over 250,000 indigenous people.
- The Kouy are an ethnic minority group in Cambodia who for years have been honoring the spiritual guardians of the forest and promoting peace and happiness.
- Inequality persists. Often there are fewer women than men taking part in #citizenscience programs. Today we emphasize the need for gender-balanced citizen science that upholds democratic values and overcomes deep-rooted biases. #WomenInScience 🟣 What actions could help to even out these curves?
- These graphs are taken from a 2022 study on the biodiversity monitoring platform Artportalen. Research like this helps us understand #gender biases in #citizenscience, as a first step for addressing them. Do you know of other similar studies? #womeninSTEM ➡️ Full article: doi.org/10.1007/s132...
- 🎉Congratulations! The PolinizAÇÃO project wraps up its 7 participatory workshops, paving the way for an Action Plan to protect #pollinators in Portugal! A great collaboration between citizens & institutions. We’re proud to be part of it! Here's how it happened! 🐝🌿 @pollinet.bsky.social
-
View full threadWhat is the next step? @pollinet.bsky.social will gather all this valuable knowledge and translate it into an Action Plan that fosters collaboration for raising awareness, monitoring, and protecting #pollinators.
- If you like this approach, this is just one of the use cases in which more4nature is applying its socio-scientific methodology to transform conservation practices through #CitizenScience. ℹ️ Discover all the buzz: www.more4nature.eu/cases
- They have brought together an incredible group: researchers, civil society organizations, citizen scientists, educators, #policymakers, public institutions, and the private sector. And they have engaged in 7 participatory workshops!
- Sessions have included discussions on current knowledge and future research, management practices in urban, rural and classified natural areas, #beekeeping, public policy and funding. We are captivated by this participatory approach! 🏵️🐝
- 🦋 #Pollinators provide essential ecosystem services for nature, agriculture and human well-being, but they face global declines caused by landscape homogenization, biological invasions & climate change. This endangers not only the functionality of #biodiversity, but also food production.
- This is where the PolinizAÇÃO project kicks in. EU Member States are called upon to develop national action plans to reverse pollinator decline. And the best way to do this is in close collaboration with stakeholders and citizens. 🌿🔍
