- Souter was a George H.W. Bush appointee who drifted to the left early in his tenure. He then served as a staunch advocate of democracy and civil liberties, defending the rights of voters, women, immigrants, racial minorities, and LGBTQ people. He was a great champion of equality and freedom for all.
