I was never able to fart around while I was “finding myself“ because my parents didn’t have money to support that
Journalism was a working class profession until the late 70s/early 80s and I think it was a mistake in retrospect to “professionalize” it
This is absolutely a systematic reason working class writers are underrepresented in the field, but we DO exist. We just had to bust our asses and catch a few extremely lucky breaks to wriggle in through the cracks.

When I graduated in ‘71 (a recession), the only jobs were at small (Youngstown) papers where you made min wage, no benefits, and had to have your own car. And there were very few of them.
