So this chart, and every other chart I've seen, shows a $163b cut in the topline spending, but then the breakdown adds up to a substantial net increase. So where is the cut coming from that doesn't show up in the breakdowns?
There is a lot to parse through in Trump's budget request that just came out.
But here are the highlights:
- Total, a 10% overall cut
- State Dept is getting hacked to bits. Mind-boggling.
- HUD is nearly slashed in half.
- Education Dept is still kickin in FY26
- HHS down by more than a quarter
the disconnect comes from including reconciliation funding (which isn't even discretionary funding) in the agency numbers but not in the total numbers

the white house didn't provide enough information to perfectly do agency comparisons while excluding the reconciliation funding (which they also.... seem to show spending instead of funding; the white house did major data crimes, and journalists are confused and not handling it well)
