I’m not super worried about research with immediate high value commercial applications. But that research often grows from research without immediate high value and we call that “investing” which is a core function of government that the “party of business” has no understanding of.
Hard to see how tariffs are going to bring business and innovation back to America (a premise I do NOT accept) if you're killing off the innovation and small businesses that make that possible
so private industry could support it?

And the EU, especially France, are now spending hundreds of millions of euros to snap up top researchers who will need to flee the US to keep their careers as scientists; those of Chinese descent will go to China. We won't survive 3.5 more years of this.
