View full threadAnd in case you need to read & learn more on the #RTM effect, in vegetation science in particular, I really recommend you to read this amazing paper ⬇️ shorturl.at/5oo0H
- Just for some context & why I do insist on this here, the last 2 papers I have reviewed recently overlooked the #RTM effect
- It does not necessarily mean that baseline conditions cannot have a biologically meaningful impact on the magnitude of change between t1 & t2, but then it is necessary to test whether the slope of this relationship between t2-t1 & t1 significantly differs from what you would expect just by chance
- That is why we need to build & use null models in ecology 😃 It helps us assess the strength of a pattern which could be observed just by chance! That is exactly what we have been doing in a study on mountain plant species range shifts in response to climate change ⛰️☘️🌡📈🌐🌍 shorturl.at/nAs4f
- If we run a linear model linking the change over time (t2-t1) against the baseline conditions at t1, we find a clear negative relationship: this is the #RTM effect ⬇️ If we scale the baseline conditions in the model, we can see that the intercept does not differ from zero close to the mean at t1
- So, even if the model detect a relationship between the change over time (t2-t1) & the baseline conditions at t1, this effect has no ecological meaning here & it just happens by chance 🤯
- The idea of the #RTM is that each time you measure a variable a 2nd time, the most extreme values (highest & lowest) at t1 will likely be less extreme at t2 and get closer to the mean 🧐 Analysing the paired differences (t2-t1) will systematically lead to a correlation w/ the conditions at t1
- Let say you want to track the upper elevation limit of a set of 💯 species along an elevation gradient ranging from 1265 m a.s.l. & 3675 m a.s.l. ⛰️ Let's make it simple in #R: draw 2 times, at t1 & t2, 100 values from a uniform distribution & plot the data ⬇️

- Good question indeed 🧐 I personally use #BI as a very broad term ranging from intra-kingdom BIs, like plant-plant interactions such as competition for light, to inter-kingdom BIs, such as plant-microbiome (i.e., the holobiont) 🌳🍄 I even consider microclimatic modifications as a form of indirect BI

- Binarising probability values from species distribution models #SDMs can be very tricky when tracking #species #range #shifts in response to #climate #change ➡️ We need to use multiple threshold-selection methods beyond just TSS which tend to underestimate range contractions 🌐🌍🌡📈💧📉 shorturl.at/R0uOx
