Let’s talk about cougar science for a moment in light of what's been happening in Canmore and with the mother cougar that got killed by hound hunters, orphaning two young spotted kittens. (if you missed it, you can catch up on my IG or FB)... 1/4
Feb 16, 2025 19:02There is no current data or science that shows cougars are causing Alberta ungulate populations to decline. There is lots of science, however, that shows cougar hunting negatively affects cougar population dynamics. 2/4
This same science also shows that cougar hunting increases conflict with livestock, pets and humans (Minister Loewen loves to ignore this one).
The science is also clear that cougar populations do not need to be ‘managed’. Cougars self-regulate their own populations through territorial defense. 3/4
There is no such thing as an ‘exploding cougar population that wipes out all the deer/sheep/game.’
