- 1. Actually laughed. 2. Boston operates under the premise that "if you don't already know where you're going, you don't deserve to get there", and the signage is designed accordingly.
- my god i am needing to use microsoft word for something right now and, like, how do people tolerate this

- Oh a template. Yeah, abandon all hope of it making the slightest bit of sense. If there's an image in the header or footer it seems to make everything else randomly explode.
- I'm actually completely clueless on how this could be happening. can body text be its own float in Word? like under what circumstances does body text not follow page margins?
- Admittedly I haven't seen that one before. Conversion from another format? Coming from a different version of word?
- um i closed the document and re-opened it and a visual element is there that wasn't there before
- Don't get me started on floats. I still use word regularly and it's always floats that mess it up in new and exciting ways

View full threadI can see a couple levels to that… I had to [take this course] feels like it can be answered with where it fits in the larger field (I have fun with this, since I teach history and do applied work). I had to [go to university] is different… I’d ask what they want to do after.
- I was planning to teach a course on learning and motivation this year (ironically it was underenrolled so it didn't start), and the first class was literally going to start with "Why are you here? - In this class - At this university - In college at all" I think it's good for them to reflect on it
- This week in my Science Communication course, we’re discussing the process of publishing scientific papers and going through peer review. What advice do you have for Masters students thinking about this for the first time? 🧪🌎🦑
- 1. Use the screen-reader to read the final draft aloud to you before you submit it. Great for catching typos. 2. Outline before drafting, but don't overcommit to the outline if it turns out not to work. 3. Decide what journal and article type you're submitting before writing the first full draft.
- I've tried to get students to understand *why* I want them to write by pointing out that the writing itself is only the output - what I want to see is whether *they* can think and communicate the ideas. LLMs and other tools fundamentally subvert this.
- There's this "forklift in a gym" analogy going around that I really like but can't find the original source. Basically, the point is not to move the weights, the point is to do the work.
- is there a subculture of bsky users who are email software nerds who have, for instance, deeply considered views on esoteric platforms like Google Inbox (RIP), Fastmail, HEY etc

View full threaddoes android Gmail let you use multiple label types in notification actions?
- No, just mark as read and delete or archive. Being able to apply a specific subset of tags is definitely an step up.
- Like I find quite a few things about HEY annoying but this one feature, where I can triage all incoming email *without opening the app* via notification actions, is worth $100/yr for me honestly. Saves sooooo much time
- The Android Gmail and Samsung mail app have that option for me, but you need to set it up in the notification settings. Thoroughly mid otherwise though, and not what I use on desktop
