It was only later, when marine biologists got access to the video, that the pieces began to come together.
It was a recoding from 2000 reached marine biology student Heather Holston.
She forwarded the footage to teuthologist Michael Vecchione at the
Smithsonian Institution. Upon examination, Vecchione identified the specimen as a member of the Magnapinnidae family.
Prior knowledge of the species was limited to juvenile specimens that were obtained.
They published a paper in 2001 in Science, marking the first live description of a Magnapinna squid in the wild.
Scary and magnificent at the same time
