Dalesia grinned. “I bet he learned a lesson from it.”
“Yeah.” McWhitney nodded. “He learned the harp.” (Stark, Nobody Runs Forever)

- my ego is taking a beating lately, good grief.
- Ah, playing more fighting games?
- Nah, losing in a fair effort would never make me feel bad about my self
- #WeReadsComics Reading the backmatter for League of Extraordinary Gentlemen: Century so quickly after LoEG volume II answers my thought about LoEG 2's backup story mildly suffering from the transition to collected editions being the definitive reading experience. Century's story is modular, 🧵
-
View full threadIt's less about the length and more about the approach for the prose. The Nemo graphic novels (maybe the high point of League for me?) have a medium-length magazine column at the end, which is about as good as it gets. The short chunks build into a nice whole, like putting together a puzzle.
- One last—back during the Black Dossier days, there was a terrible blow-up with O'Neill, Moore, and a few commentators about the golliwog character. It was kinda nice to see Moore refer to it as "a minstrel-costumed racial slur clipped from the label on a jar of marmalade" on the last page of Century
- I was thinking the exact same thing! I hadn't read anything beyond BLACK DOSSIER till last year. When I got to CENTURY, I was pleasantly surprised by the switch and by how much it made the experience a whole lot more cohesive and enjoyable.
- Yeah, the switch is really remarkable. The almanac approach...it was almost TOO good, you know what I mean? Like "Here's our glossary. It's written in-universe." Excellent work but man, I cannot eat that much in one sitting! Or two! Or six!
- League of Extraordinary Gentlemen: Century's story is modular, broken up into a number of small chunks per issue, which then translate into a series of chunks placed at the end of the graphic novel. It's a much more accommodating reading experience, more of a natural flow from comic to text this way
- Finding the balance of these kinds of things is interesting. I thought Criminal's back-up material being a relevant or resonant essay was a great touch, not too tall an order. O'Neill & Moore continue storytelling through prose, though, which made vol 2 clang to my 2025 taste but Century sing. 🧵
- Ratatouille, only it’s animal style martial arts in a Bloodsport tournament
- There’s an echo of this idea in Final Crisis and Seven Soldiers, where the New Gods fall, are incarnated, and suddenly subject to the erosion of time
