- 10 French films to get to know me by Un coeur en hiver La haine Un prophète La grande illusion Rififi Le samouraï Hiroshima mon amour Le scaphandre et le papillon Le salaire de la peur Les parapluies de Cherbourg
- This brilliant essay by @elissalash.bsky.social raises fascinating questions about the film Anora and how places like strip clubs are portrayed in film and the public imagination.
- Finished S2 and my feelings about Andor have only deepened. It is so well crafted. With a proper story. Fully human characters. Vivid dialogue. Wonderful production design. And evokes a full palette of emotions.
- I've been wondering if I need the expensive power tools with the excellent dust extraction. Well, today I did some work. Routing and sanding. First time in several years. Hours later I can still feel sawdust in my nostrils. Feels like another "I'm too old for this" moment.
- Uruguay's former president, Jose "Pepe" Mujica, has passed away. Mujica was one of the most unique and inspiring political figures of the past 100 years. The world would be a better place if there were more politicians like him.
- I wonder how many people's career is built on exaggerating their credentials. I'm thinking of people who worked in big companies and who then take credit for things as if they led them when maybe they were just a junior person who worked on a small part of a big project.
- Up until recently I hadn't heard Somebody That I Used To Know by Gotye for at least a decade. But, I've heard it at least five times in the past two weeks while shopping. Why do stores in Australia play so much old music?
- The most golden moment of the day was sitting in the warm late afternoon sun reading a friend’s brilliant essay while waiting for my car to charge.
- I've always been drawn to creative forms that blend and defy convention. Fusion music, avant-garde cinema, interdisciplinary academic studies, and postmodernism in general. Obvious category and genre definitions never felt like home. As if I had to turn part of myself off in order to belong.
- The dog that barks at everything is barking at the delivery guy. He's standing on the footpath calling to the dog's owners. They tell the guy to just open the gate. Guy says no way and points at dog. Then he drops parcel over the gate. Dog starts scratching parcel. Owners then appear.
- Mother's Day shook me up this year. Grief is an odd journey.
- Today's Japanese lesson was difficult for a reasons that had nothing to do with the lesson. I woke up tired, distracted, lacking confidence. I made some basic mistakes. But remembered most of the important things. Wasn't having fun though. Need a break now to avoid it staining the rest of the day.
- Cultivate a gluttonous curiosity for the ways the world can inspire and surprise you.
- Me: today is a non-writing day. No pressure. Just do other things and chill. Also me: sit down for ten minutes and bang out six hundred cleanly written words.
