I think one thing progressives are underestimating in the NYC mayoral election is the degree to which perceptions of crime and disorder are fueling Cuomo's dominance. It's not just name recognition. A lot of TV news viewers and tabloid readers have been fed a mound of BS about a city out of control.
And I don't even think this is a Trump-like case of people memory holing how bad Cuomo was as governor. Even back when he was in office a lot of folks didn't know how bad he was! They just knew that Covid Daddy got on TV every day and made them feel better.
I'd bet that easily three-quarters of NYers have no idea that he spearheaded a Republican takeover of the legislature.
May 14, 2025 13:11Right. And a lot of New Yorkers probably have no idea that the MTA's woes were his fault. They probably only think that he's the guy who got a pretty new Kosciuszko Bridge built or who saved a lot of money by avoiding a lengthy L train shutdown, regardless of the details.
