Eric Mortensen
You probably know me from Linkfilter or Blip or Thingiverse or @fatedmates.net. You don't remember me from the other stuff. I barely even remember.
I make large scale audiovisual art and podcasts.

- So many people are alarmed about this but very comfortable with their own use of LLMs.
- Reposted by Eric Mortensenthis is not true either legally or in a colloquial sense, but an NYT reporter says it like he's telling you the weather.
- Reposted by Eric MortensenNo matter what this Administration tells the American people, the law is very clear: Members of Congress have a legal right to enter any DHS detention facility to conduct oversight without prior notice - something I’ve done twice this year without issue.

- Launching a tv and film initiative that's completely independent of YouTube is the most Google thing I can imagine.
- Reposted by Eric Mortensenvirginia is practically the epicenter of trump's attacks on the federal government and if warner can't credibly perform opposition to the president then i think he's toast. the real question is whether there is a virginia democrat ambitious enough to throw caution to the wind and go after him.

- I love OMNY when it just arbitrarily decides not to work and there's nothing I can do about it.
- With the MTA in a transition to full OMNY tap-and-go technology, transit officials said Monday that one-third of last month’s subway and bus riders remain MetroCard loyalists. www.thecity.nyc/2025/04/30/m...
- Maybe Tim Cook gave all that cash to Trump because he saw a like-minded individual. Someone who, like him, would push and push and push against all logic and reason out of spite and greed and contempt. Smart people know you can't blindly push forever. Ruthless assholes know no other way.
- Announcing that you're going to use AI instead of just using it is like announcing you're going to use Microsoft Word instead of just using it. BTW, both AI and MS Word are equally suited to this task. You can only reduce traffic by reducing the number of cars on the road.

- Reposted by Eric MortensenSpeaker Johnson says Republicans won’t gut Medicaid in the reconciliation bill. Reality check from me: They will absolutely have to cut Medicaid to meet their own targets — unless they junk the budget nearly all of them voted for. That’s not conjecture, it’s simple math.
- “I want you, but I need to know you’re ready,” the Meta AI bot said in Cena’s voice to a user identifying as a 14-year-old girl. Reassured that the teen wanted to proceed, the bot promised to “cherish your innocence” before engaging in a graphic sexual scenario.
- Summarization follows comprehension. AI will never be able to summarize, but it will get better at tricking you.
- Reposted by Eric MortensenThis is much the same logic as arresting the judge in WI. There is obviously nothing wrong with asking law enforcement, including masked officials, to confirm they are, in fact, law enforcement. The goal is to create an absolutely subservient population.

- Reposted by Eric MortensenThis is the Bluesky account of the future DOJ-in-Exile. Trump won't be President forever.
- Did all that forced AI bullshit change Bing's standing at all? Is it more popular? Is it perceived as different or better? Is it thought of at all? In the face of Google continuing to go to shit, I hear lots about other alternatives like @kagi.com, but nothing about Bing.
- Canva is the most bloated piece of shit. Everyone who uses it cranks out mediocrity. So many folks who rail against AI seem to be thoroughly into it, despite it turning out the same breed of endless, indistinct slop. And it's needlessly complex for something that is usually putting text in a square.
- Apple insists on charging astronomical fees for stands that actually set your monitor at the right height. Fortunately, I held on to my Wax Trax! boxed set metal case, which is the exact right dimensions

- Axios, like most contemporary political media outlets, targets the kind of person who values The Savvy Contrarian Insider Take above all else. I'm honestly surprised the first version was posted at all.
- Reposted by Eric MortensenSome stats from 100 days in on congestion pricing: - Complaints about car-honking are down 70% - The Holland Tunnel has 65% fewer delays at rush hour; time to get thru it is down 48% - 6 million fewer cars - Half as many traffic-related injuries - 1.5 million more visitors to BIDs year over year
- This is Overcast, but I suspect it doesn't have control over how this is displayed. So Apple is the problem here, and it's doing the same thing as Spotify. It's scrolling a rather insignificant amount of text rather than taking advantage of this enormous screen.

- Exciting and unnerving. Visceral and demanding of my complete attention. I have a hard time doing anything else while listening. I can barely think. It is simultaneously for me and against me. It's Vlaidslav Delay and Coil and Chicks on Speed+The Noheads. Sorta? Having a real experience here.

- Remember: Joe Rogan is a Spotify show. They pay him a massive amount of money because they like what he says and does and want it affiliated with their brand.

- My gut says we'll see Marco Arment sell Overcast within the next 365 days. After 10 years of excellence, my experience using the app over the last year has been subpar. And there's been no communication about it. Bummer.
- John Gruber calls two human protesters "insufferable self-involved showboats" because they interrupted a gigantic, massively powerful, multinational, Trump-donating corporation's birthday party. His vitriolic pearl-clutching is absolutely uncalled for here, and could run, unchanged, on Fox News.

- A succinct summation of Trump: "That’s how Trump’s mind works. This is what Trump has been saying about trade deficits for decades. It’s like how he understands “asylum” to mean “insane asylum” and so when he talks about political asylum he starts talking about “the late great Hannibal Lecter”.
- Bluesky posts don't allow for enough characters to list all of the Photoshop alternatives that easily meet the needs of 99% of Photoshop users, but I'll just list Pixelmator Pro and Acorn to start. Not only are they useful, they're not bloated, draconian, legacy blobs like Photoshop.

- When the press used the term "quiet quitting", it was often just referring to people who had decided to do the amount of work that matched the amount they were being paid. But @schumer.senate.gov? There's a quiet quitter.

- I say this to anyone who will listen to me (not many!): AOC's political instincts are the best in the Democratic party.
- You're rightfully upset by this for many reasons, but one of them is that you know AI/LLMs can't be trusted to do important work. So why are you using it?
- This scathing piece is easily the most significant @gruber.foo's long career as the preeminent Apple watcher, even if it is quite late (as he concedes). But I think he misses a bit of the bigger picture.
