View full threadBoomer gen US Catholics often have backgrounds worthy of a historical novel: Old Mexican families who lived in Teijas before the war; Irish-Americans who fled the Great Hunger; Vietnamese boat ppl; Italians and Poles in the early c20th; Syriac Catholics from the Middle East, Cubans escaping Castro.
- So of course it’s not an ideological gotya, but it’s definitely newsworthy- partly in a nosy gossip mag way, but also as quite a nice illustrated example explainer of “Is the Pope a Catholic, and does the word Catholic mean what it says on the tin’
- Is it, though? New Orleans Creole community are literally the original USA Catholics. Proving a Pope has a close genealogical link to them is a bit like documenting legit Puritan heritage for a high-profile WASP.

View full threadReminds me of the people who laughed in our safety courses at uni. Accident reports were entertaining to them. They werent scared of hurting others. Ethics can only do so much against lack of empathy. So the professional framework needs to step in. Some people only respect personal consequences.
- It’s terrifyingly easy for humankind to be nudged into a mindset where the in-group starts to see the out-group (however those groups may be defined) as slightly less than fully human. Sociopathic tendencies then become a strategic advantage in society and it’s a vicious cycle. Happening everywhere.

- I wonder what percentage of the ‘economically inactive’ are informally giving or receiving care. I’d guess most.
- I think you are right. People who can shut entire nations out of humanity scare the life out of me. There's no reason or compassion to even appeal to. You cant change their minds, because they arent using their minds to say these things. They're working from hatred.
- Epidemiology is an inherently scary discipline because it deals with people as numbers. Law is an inherently scary discipline because it literally both-sides every question. Each has an ethical and professional framework to rein that in. But when a lawyer playacts at epidemiology, they lose both.

- The giant UK postwar rebuilding programme (1950-1980) led to an awful lot of Catholic schools and parishes being built, mostly named for St Thomas More and other short-lived Tudors who fell out with the State. *Very* weird reading @rahaeli.bsky.social ‘s thread from that background.
