- I'm pretty sure he only ever ran for president because of Obama Derangement Syndrome. Some say it all started back at that one correspondents' dinner... remember, fascism is always about insecurity.
- Notice too how the most fervent advocates of the lab leak were also advocates of herd immunity via mass infection. They treat infection #1 as a crime and catastrophe to distract from how they tried to encourage every infection after that. That’s the purpose of the lab leak for many.
- The Nation was spoon-fed documents from a bad-faith Republican House committee and covered them as if they were a scandal. The more I look into the lab leak the more shocked I am at how desperately the media tried to launder the theory into something respectable. www.thenation.com/article/poli...

- This is what I'm always saying! Whether it's an Evil Chinese Bioweapon (that is also somehow completely safe and you should be infected repeatedly to stop woke or whatever) or a natural coronavirus that started mutating towards this years before Wuhan, it doesn't impact mitigation.
- lol I guess I'm a pariah in certain corners now for a somewhat unserious response to a thread about the unserious conspiracies that covid was a lab leak. I said something alluding to the couple papers about pre- Dec '19 wastewater signals in places other than China. +
-
View full threadI know I'm ranting a lot but autistic perseveration. I don't like being the clown of the day 😅 I genuinely just think the preprint about the Spanish signal and the accepted paper about the Brazilian signal, both pre-Wuhan, are neat, and a potential counterpoint to the Evil Chinese Bioweapon claims.
- Also ffs *obviously* they didn't *sequence* these wastewater samples pre-Wuhan. There are things called freezers, where you can put samples to re-test at a later date. Sigh. Anyway, I'd love to see some phylogenetics on the early samples.
- My point was basically we maybe don't actually know where it originated. Things evolve quietly, and usually by definition things exist before they are discovered, no? Am I insane or does it make sense that it could've circulated unnoticed pre-virulence, particularly if it evolved naturally? +
- ok my honeymoon is definitely over now. we’re on the plane. i logged back on for real and found out the boers are so mad at me lol
- that's a win though
- This seems like kind of a big story and it's frustrating that we're still getting "it's time for liberals to consider the lab leak" think pieces. The two best pieces of "evidence" come directly from the Trump Administration and have completely fallen apart under scrutiny!

- Yay for good faith and open-minded curiosity! 💫 I want to read more now, see if there's a follow-up on that early Brazil signal...

- evolution? things can become more or less virulent over time. plus asymptomatic infection has always been pretty common with covid. tbh i didn't think so many people would get so activated by my not-super-serious post. feeling chagrin for my insufficiently-thorough review of the info lol
- to everyone in the replies, I'm not a conspiracy theorist. I was reading a lot of preprints a few years ago and stopped, because I didn't think the origin actually mattered much. Anyway, I thought I remembered reading about an early signal from Brazil as well. www.sciencedirect.com/science/arti...
- Like genuinely, I only really care about covid in the future tense. The genie is out of the bottle, so. 🤷 I just thought potential earlier signals were neat. Not "tHeY aRe HiDiNg InFo!" but a combination of evolution, asymptomatic infection, and a lack of sequencing for seemingly normal infections.

- Thanks for sharing this! I wasn't able to find a follow-up. (admittedly didn't try too hard because I don't really care about its origin) I had kind of assumed that the early signal was from a SARS-CoV-2 that just hadn't become virulent yet. Even now there's a high rate of asymptomatic infection.

- I was looking for a follow-up and didn't find one. Do you have the source? (gen. interest) Also not that I'm an epidemiologist or anything, but couldn't it have been more flu-like and then evolved increased virulence later on? I've had plenty of URIs not otherwise specified, def not sequenced.
- Wasn't there a wastewater signal in *Europe* as far back as March 2019? Like hello. Even my almost-90 year old grandmother is well aware of that. Especially because my uncle was flown back from the Netherlands emergently for an "unknown viral lung infection" that almost killed him in summer 2019.
- Honestly this is probably a case like "Spanish" influenza. Or the "South African" variant of covid. The first to release information gets stuck with the stigma of origin, even if their willingness to release info is because of integrity.
- is it too much to ask in my life to have a friend who is a bear??

- Am I daft or is there just not a zoological/ethological term for the sound cats do when they're "oh long johnson"-ing? It's not a growl, a yowl, a hiss, nor anything else as far as I can tell. It's during agitation, typically includes lip-licking, and is seemingly often prolonged. continued...
-
View full threadAlso, I would differentiate this from what I call "Gargamels"-- this may be a my-cat-only thing ...? My cat will sing a long song with less defined syllables than "incantations", which includes trills (happy! not agitated) every time she picks up her favorite toy. She has to perform first. continued
- Basically it sounds like she's going "Gargamel???? Gargamellllll? Brrrrr??? Prrrt? Brrrrrrgamel????" and so on. After a couple minutes of this she picks up her toy and carries it wherever she was heading with it. tldr-- Can we get some new names for cat vocalizations?
- Personally I refer to it as "incantations" because it sounds like they're speaking wizard gibberish interspersed with more recognizable sounds of cat aggression. There are vowels and consonants in there! 😂 i.e. "loco ookoop magooo...." (cat fans can hear this.) Clearly a curse! 🪄 continued again...
- a non-inclusive list of aspects of contemporary american culture that are fascist-associated, in my estimation: - the "natural" makeup look - heroin chic being back - meat-forward diets, sometimes keto - women being obsessed with their cycles and getting off bc - much of so-called wellness culture
- - covid-is-over-ism; pre-existing conditions --> acceptable death - doomerism without prepping - beige + grey aesthetics - boobs > butts - ironic detachment - forgetting the dead - that contour line above the tip of the nose (aka Anglo cosplay) - "old money" +"clean girl" - aesthetic over subculture
- just to clarify I'm not saying participating in some of these automatically means you're fash. this will likely be an evolving list lol. feel free to chime in.
- An anecdote that didn’t make the final draft: Last summer, looking at my notes on upcoming NYC restaurant openings, I saw how many new steakhouses were on the calendar and I knew with sudden, thudding certainty that Trump was going to win the election

- yeah I mean anti-vegetarianism, the carnivore diet, and by association also sometimes keto have become part of american neofascist culture. I feel like I could write a book about all the seemingly innocuous aspects of contemporary american culture that are fascist in origin or association.
- basically eating meat signals traditionalism, anti-wokeness, and divorcing oneself from the "virtue signaling" that is giving a damn about the imminent collapse as consequence of the climate crime.

- Hey, given the state of things I've been thinking epidemiologists, molecular biologists, people at wastewater plants, etc. need to team up and do some guerrilla molecular biology -- that is to say, grassroots wastewater testing. LMK if you're interested or know people who are.

- It is truly wild that it is estimated that more than 20 million people died of Covid and the prevailing vibe is that the world overreacted. That is an astonishing toll! More people died of Covid in the US than in the Civil War. www.pbs.org/newshour/hea...
