Bear in mind that Scotland has been a net exporter of people for hundreds of years. I exported myself to the US in the 80s, for example. They want to know if "where you're from" is a place they might like to move to.
my country of origin has problems and upsides and is a place i wouldn't recommend someone move if they [factor here] but also they might enjoy it anyway in which case i would advise them to give it a try. i hate it and i love it and i disdain it and i would kill for it
i know it sounds like i'm taking the piss but i actually am being profoundly, unbelievably earnest. maybe the truth is that my feelings about my country are in fact way too intense for small talk
