- 🧵 Proud to share our new paper in @apsrjournal.bsky.social (open access)! We used a field experiment to test how contact with citizens shapes POLICE OFFICER attitudes then developed inductive theory about when it works v. backfires. Paper w/ @matthewjnanes.bsky.social & @nicoravanilla.bsky.social
- Just published on APSR First View: "How Does Community Policing Affect Police Attitudes? An Experimental Test and a Theory of Bureaucrat-Citizen Contact" by Dotan Haim, Matthew Nanes, and Nico Ravanilla. www.cambridge.org/core/journal...

- Thanks so much!!
- Community policing improved officer understanding of citizens' concerns but not trust, empathy, or accountability. But we noticed that certain officers reacted very differently! We theorize that social contact 1) helps "unembedded" bureaucrats but 2) backfires when it heightens safety concerns.
- Some takeaways: A. Bureaucrats' attitudes are crucial outcomes! They shape how they do their jobs. B. Field experiments are powerful, but we can learn even more by capturing unexpected insights that lead to new inductive theories. C. Huge undertaking by our partners and staff. We're SO grateful.
- Introducing Conflictsky, a new feed for political conflict and violence! Like and pin the feed here: bsky.app/profile/did:... To post, tag with 'conflictsky' or 'violencesky' It's a polisky sub-feed, so request to join that list if you haven't already: www.paulmusgrave.info/how-to-use-p...

- Hey Tim, I hadn't realized this until now, but I think because this was a polisky sub feed (which is now defunct), new folks can't be added to the list. I'll look into the best way to fix that!

- Nothing more boring than complaining about peer review but I will admit that “single-county studies don’t belong in a top-3 journal” was really a new one for me. Another gem: “not a high enough percent of the paper’s citations are to top-3 journals.” What are we doing here 😂

- NEW WP! What happens when wartime misinfo is corrected? To find out, @thomasjwood.bsky.social, Raushan Zhandayeva, Bailey Scott and I evaluate corrections in Russia, Ukraine, BLR, EST and KAZ. Overall: Corrections improve accuracy but don't affect which side people support: osf.io/efvsd/

- Wow, that sounds amazing! Excited to see a working paper when it's ready!
- Conflictsky folks, give this paper a read! I think it's one of the best recent papers published on political violence. Really novel theory, and incredibly creative empirics.
- Really pleased to share that "Making Sense, Making Choices: How Civilians Choose Survival Strategies During Violence" is accepted at the APSR. @apsa.bsky.social You can see the accepted version here! I'll post more about the paper once it's up on FirstView. aidanmilliff.com/media/Millif...

- Excited to see my Blueskee (tm) feed getting more interesting as more people join! One thing that doesn't seem as common on here: a good old-fashioned "paper thread" of 5-10 posts describing a recent publication/WP. Has that kind of thing gone out of style?
