Probably the biggest improvement to my project-based classes in the past year has been having more mandatory, in-person, but low-stakes check-ins. Just need to show me what you’ve done so far a few times during the semester, and you get an 100% if you do.
On the “mandatory” side, forces students to start a bit earlier, and the in-person conversation part tends to make students feel they need to know what they’re talking about a bit more, which reduces how often I get random stuff someone didn’t do themselves and can’t explain turned in.
Do you guide them on how to do checkins? With 4-6 min duration, some can easily ramble their time away. Or does that learning just come from repetition - “ah, if I want a question answered, I need to lead with it?”
