This is a good and sensitive piece, and I don't want to disparage it or its writer. But I note that my bugbear comes up here, which is that "male"/"men" is commonly understood to stand for heterosexual men. This happens all the time and it always undermines or subverts the gist of the piece.
May 9, 2025 09:06Once, I went to a work do at a restaurant and my boss went, "Isn't that funny, all the men are sitting on that side and all the girls on this side!" I was sitting on the women's side, and I went, "Well, I'm a man", and she went, "No but you know what I mean."
Articles going, "Are men finally starting to wear colours?" or whatever. Well. You have your answer.
Anyway, my point being that we're not going to do very well at changing the nature of masculinity and understanding our gender if we don't first get some quite important particulars out the way.
You're right. But it's hard to write about such things within limited space without making generalisations.
