U Calgary associate professor. Communications policy and various random thoughts, usually music.
- I expected a thorough fleecing of the U.S. public during Trump 2.0, but I did not expect it to be so blatant or to be met with such a profound level of indifference.
- And Pollievre will now be representing a riding where these numbers are certainly even higher. Have fun with that Pierre.
- "Supposing Alberta does hold a referendum on secession, would you vote to leave Canada or to stay?" All respondents 🔴Stay 60% 🔵Leave 36% UCP voters 🔵Leave 65% 🔴Stay 29% ANDP voters 🔴Stay 97% 🔵Leave 2% [Angus Reid Institute, May 6-8, 2025, n=790] www.338canada.ca/p/minority-m...
- Between this and the Trump show, I'm very pleased to have the distraction of hockey playoffs right now.
- Smith admits independence referendum designed keep separatists in the UCP fold and stop new separatist parties from stealing votes. Column . calgaryherald.com/opinion/colu... #ableg #abpoli #cdnpoli #Referendum #abucp #abndp #yyc #yeg
- This is the best column I've read in some time. The damage to democracy in a few short months is far beyond what anyone thought was possible. But as Mr Cohen said "there is a crack". www.nytimes.com/2025/05/08/o...
- the CBC should step in and give Sesame Street a new home. www.nytimes.com/2025/05/06/u...
- I don't know that I've watched an entire Trump press conference before. Can the press ask for one source for the data he pulls out of the ether (or a far more horrid location) to support his ramblings?
- Have fun with the legal definition of "produced in foreign lands", signed longtime Cancon supporters.

- Congrats to @ucalgary.bsky.social graduate students from the Dept of Communication, Media and Film for organizing the conference MEDIATING THE MOMENT: A(n Interdisciplinary) Conversation, featuring keynote speaker @bdecillia.bsky.social from @mountroyalu.bsky.social . Great conference.
- Thank you Indigenous groups of Alberta. www.theglobeandmail.com/canada/artic...
- Fascinating story of a small town newspaper in Crow's Nest Pass standing up to Silicon Valley.
- Meanwhile, back in Alberta: referendums, Ottawa-bashing, and correcting voter fraud that does not exist. www.cbc.ca/news/canada/...
- Some media trumpeting that 67% of Canadians voted yesterday. I'm the flip side: I can't believe 1/3 of Canadians couldn't be bothered to vote.
- How is this possible?
- Upper and Lower Canada really delivered for the Liberals last night.
- So much of my involvement in communications policy comes down to this: an informed citizenry. Vote wisely Canada.
- I'm in neither camp. After 40 years, I still couldn't name you a Phish song.
- After all this, 44% of Americans remain onboard. The rot is far deeper than the Oval Office www.nytimes.com/2025/04/23/u...
- Deadline Hollywood paying attention to the cultural shift up north. Sharp comments,as usual, from Marla Boltman of @friendscndm.bsky.social deadline.com/2025/04/cana...
- My act of resistance soundtrack this evening: @kdlang.bsky.social 's gorgeous Hymns of the 49th Parallel. This is what my Alberta sounds like.
- Not the source I expected to call for a mass uprising in the States, complete with closing Marx reference. But he's totally right. Your move, America. www.nytimes.com/2025/04/17/o...
- The anti CBC argument remains unchanged since 1929.
- The guy in the The West Wants Out baseball cap seems a jolly fellow.
- Happy to be at this event tonight.
- The level of rot in America goes far deeper than the Oval Office. Large portions of the population are celebrating the current lack of legal process.
- Juanita Taylor has been excellent on @cbcradiocanada.bsky.social this week in the far north.
- Wow. For many people, this is as close as Canada gets to a Saint.
- This piece by @robsonfletcher.com made me reflect, then put on Nirvana really loud. www.cbc.ca/news/canada/...
- Preach Barack. Canadian universities, especially in Alberta, listen up.
- Sound of spring in Calgary: a Northern Flicker Woodpecker bashing his fool head against a metal chimney pipe. #yyc

- Completely on board with this. But I also think, haven't we heard this before? www.theglobeandmail.com/politics/art...
- Hear hear. Been banging this drum for years.
- Of course, in Alberta the biggest concern right now is we don't have our own police force.

- Answer: no. Because over 70 million Americans voted for him and this is what he said he was going to do.
- I can't for the life of me figure out how Rogers keeps buying everything under the sun.
- Open and Close from the very good new Jason Isbell album: "She speaks in a whisper and calls me by name And she says I remind her of Calgary, where she was raised". Not sure how to interpret that, but I'm glad its there.

- The free market expert PM in waiting strongly advocating for public media. A retooled, stronger CBC is great news for Canada.
- Yes, the tariffs are terrible, but I was American I'd likely be more focused on what has already done to universities, the legal profession, defense, the civil service and basic right of innocent until proven guilty. A seemingly invincible nation severely weakened within a few months. Staggering.
- Still unclear to me: do the prices of products from these now-tariffed countries remain unchanged in Canada? Or do we get these imports via the U.S. (true for many electronics for example) therefore we will be subject to the new tariff price? We have nothing against Lesotho.
- The UK must be feeling better today knowing it no longer holds the title of "stupidest self-inflicted national wound".
- "...another one of those populist movements that central Canada has never anticipated or understood". I've been an Albertan for a decade and still don't understand it. I guess its easy when you ignore little facts like the Liberals built you a pipeline. www.theglobeandmail.com/opinion/arti...
- Did not expect this. Where does the Rogers money keep coming from? Imagine the cost if the Leafs had ever won anything. www.theglobeandmail.com/business/art...
- One day women will get tired of politically bailing out our sorry asses.
- "The United States is descending into an anti-intellectual morass, where reason and even truth are under attack. This is a terrifying place for many academics to imagine working. A move just to the north should offer them a warm refuge." www.theglobeandmail.com/opinion/edit...
- Fully agree with Victor. The current crisis in American (and therefore global) politics is directly tied to the political economy of communications.
- Rough Trade were a significant band. Saw them open for David Bowie. Nothing sounded like them, certainly not on mainstream Canadian radio and the lyrics were explicitly sexual. It was good for this west end Toronto boy to hear that. And they appeared on SCTV. www.theglobeandmail.com/arts/article...
- Moments like this I have to remind myself: the Rocky Mountains are truly lovely.
