- Now reading (and loving) THE BETWEEN by @tananarivedue.bsky.social. It’s the Florida horror novel I’ve always wanted.
- Rabbits! Rabbits!
- I've been digging two new @gum-shoes.bsky.social albums this week. Stand-outs: "Cockroach Song," a jaunty Irish folk song from the POV of the titular insect, and "Miasma," which features the couplet: "Take me where I'm headed for / quote this raven, 'nevermore.'"
- Lunch at the Smoke House is always a cause for celebration.
- There's no joy like seeing Al Pacino answer his Shrek phone in the middle of a post-film Q&A and realizing it's his son, telling his dad he made it home safe. The entire audience SWOONED
- Someone saved my life tonight
- A movie that takes place where you're from
- Blue canary in the outlet by the light switch
- All hail GROSSE POINTE BLANK, starring @johncusack.bsky.social, which was released 28 years ago today! (And partially filmed a few blocks away from where I'm typing these words.)
- Wonder if James Ellroy is getting a piece of this action
- Just a little more than 12 hours left on the Crime Writers for Trans Rights silent auction! Want me to Zoom into your living room to talk about books and writing? Or maybe you'd like your name immortalized in one of my novels? Now's your chance! www.32auctions.com/organization...

- Little pieces of downtown Denver this morning
- Be careful out there, Left Coast Crime fam. A big red bus goes up the middle of this “pedestrian” mall; I was inadvertently playing chicken with it
- The blood font and crime scene tape is probably freaking out the civilians
- Arrived at LAX and found a woman promoting Clear, the service that allows you to bypass the security gates. Sounded good. Filled out the forms. Scanned my eyes. Scanned my face... at which point the system crashed. Trying not to take this personally.

- "I have all the characteristics of a human being: flesh, blood, skin, hair; but not a single, clear, identifiable emotion, except for greed and disgust." (AMERICAN PSYCHO, Bret Easton Ellis) via wefail.art
- Happy birthday to the demon dog James Ellroy (supported here... literally... by Rosemarie Keenan and @vpkeenan.bsky.social)!
- Once upon a time, we really had it all
- Back at the @newbeverly.bsky.social for a Fulci double.
- Back in the 90s every proper horror section had some William Browning Spencer on the shelves. I’m finally catching up with his first story collection, THE RETURN OF COUNT ELECTRIC, and it is so much offbeat fun.

- Happy Birthday to David Goodis, author of DOWN THERE and BLACK FRIDAY and my forever favorite, CASSIDY'S GIRL.
- Exactly 30 years ago I was on a James M. Cain reading binge, starting with MILDRED PIERCE (almost a random selection). I most of my youth reading horror, and a little SF, but this was my big pivot into mystery and crime… and looking back, I can see how it sparked my career.
- If you're attending Left Coast Crime this year, be sure to check out the Best Novel panel, hosted by the amazing @wendallthomas.bsky.social ! Don't skip it; all of the cool kids will make fun of you.
