I heard some guy being interviewed on NPR say he believed that in order to have intelligence you had to have a body. I am pretty sure that guy is the Josef Mengele of AI. This is how you get Skynet.
I am not saying that I believe that current AI or artificial intelligence has Intelligence, but I I am willing to believe that given enough artificial neurons, it will. At that point, how we treat it becomes much more important.
I would be more concerned that conscious AI cant/ wont be developed without a TON of Mengeles.
I cant see the line where Humans say "this is too creepy, this is invasive, this undermines individual dignity" unless there is some flesh to elicit a sense of disgust.
