Mourning the days when all we talked about was font choice, reference styles and glam humping.

- Put another way, only 56% disapprove of Trump's attacks on colleges and universities. Let that sink in.

- Reposted by Metabo_DaveBREAKING: A federal court ruled that our client Rümeysa Öztürk must be released on bail immediately. She will return home to New England as her case proceeds.
- The courts are helping. It's important to acknowledge that. In fact, without their actions things would be immeasurably worse right now.
- Reposted by Metabo_DaveJudge Session: I see no evidence of risk or danger of any kind. The court orders ICE to release Rümeysa Öztürk from custody IMMEDIATELY. She is free to return to her home in Massachusetts. Also free to travel within Mass and VT. I'm not going to restrict her travel, because I see no danger of flight
- If you're impacted by science funding cuts (who isn't at this point?) contact Chris. He's one of the good guys.

- Reposted by Metabo_DaveMy trainee just sent me this notification from the NIH about a pending F31 application. We knew it was likely to come, but it still hurt to read the words.
- The hypothesis that NIH is withholding FY25 funds to justify cutting the FY26 budgets is odd imo. There could be lots of other sinister reasons for them doing this, but the most likely explanation is newly acquired poor leadership and incompetence when it comes to getting new awards out the door
- Reposted by Metabo_DaveI have previously posted about the slow issuance of NIH award in fiscal year 2025 compared to fiscal year 2024. jeremymberg.github.io/jeremyberg.g... These data were across all of the institutes and centers at NIH. The results can be examined for each institute and center. 1/n

- A full blown Pakistan vs India conflict is just what the world needs right now FFS. What the fuck is wrong with humans?
- I suspect Memoli is still running the show at the NIH. He's the Shadow Director that faithfully executes the WH/OPM/Miller policies. Jayanta obviously has no clue what's going on.

- AI might be able to review your grant and come up with experiments, but pipetting robots are still absolute dog shit.
- I think DeepSeek needs to participate in the early career reviewer program at the NIH.
- Gives a whole new meaning to the "Visit Rwanda" sponsorship deal, right @arsenalfc.bsky.social? www.nytimes.com/2025/05/05/w...
- It was an obvious strategy that started months ago. The NIH could pay out the entirety of a new award upfront to use the money, but I don't see any signs of this happening.
- Reposted by Metabo_DaveBluetorial: Timing of getting grants out the door at NIH The pauses and low rate of releasing awards may be a problem in terms of getting the NIH appropriation spent by September 30, 2025
- Reposted by Metabo_DaveI just think it is very important for NIH watchers to be very, very clear about what the individual ICs are not permitted to do, versus what they are *choosing* to do in response to the chaos of FY2025 extramural grant awards.

- From my extensive experience with university "international student offices" in red states, it comes as no surprise to me that they are now handing over students to ICE. These depts have been morphing into regional USCIS/ICE offices for years. They are not there to help international students.
- First, they took a student from the lab next door......
- From a quick scan, there are very few red state universities that have signed up.

Anything less than that is abnormal and must be treated as such — from the courts, from Congress, from other officials, and ultimately from the people. Don't say he won't comply. Say he must.

- There is a relative calm before the storm in academia. But grant terminations, delays in NoAs and reductions in IDCs that many places are baking into their FY26 budgets ARE a perfect storm. It's hard to escape the feeling that massive RIFs are inevitable.
