- Why does the ACM, the Association for Computing Machinery, still has a website that looks the same 30 years ago, and still mails out paper forms for membership renewal?
- Cloudflare should just buy Deno
- ROFL, so true youtu.be/2_nl1cUMRC4
- We desperately need Mozilla to get the Temporal proposal across to stage 4 so as to relieve us mortals who just take the madness that is time zones in JS dates anymore.
- Charging a subscription to manage people’s subscriptions is such a great idea.
- ROFL
- One perhaps accidental advantage of Brexit is Amazon has finally stopped selling electrical devices with those stupid European plugs to the U.K. Hurrah
- LinearMouse and Mac Mouse Fix should be combined into the same app
- Every time I see a submission on HN on microservices, it is inevitably written by a junior dev arguing against another junior dev's stupid opinion. Microservices have nothing to do with your eng org chart but everything to do with scalability and most importantly, resiliency.
- Dayaaaam Mac Mouse Fix is goooooooood.
- Are all those no-code/low-code SaaS doing okay these days?
- I have not written a do while loop for like 20 years. Is this bad?
- I honestly don’t know how data scientists and ML engineers deal with constant uncompilable C/C++/R extensions when installing python packages. They must have the patience of a river.
- What a load of horseshit nodejs.org/en/learn/get...
- AI will not lead to any so-called age of abundance. We are already in an age of abundance, it’s called Chinese manufacturing and dumping, and we don’t like it.
- Given the flood of highly technical and information dense short videos with no pauses between topics, I have to ask, are the TikTok gen Zs able to learn 4x faster than millennials or am I just old?
- I wonder how many businesses Biden’s inflation has killed.
- Whatever the Americans come up with, the Chinese do it better at a quarter the cost. No wonder American manufacturing is being slaughtered left and right.
- Drop was sold and WASD is gone too. So basically Unicomp is the only company that’s still making mechanical keyboards in the US.
- Ohhh fuck me, Deskthority was sold to some AI slop generator company in Singapore and they took down the wiki
- Ok, in terms of coding, Claude is still king, but Gemini isn’t too bad.
- I wonder how many more years it’s going to take for GitHub to fix all of their websocket bugs
- React hooks was a mistake
- CNBC and Bloomberg loves to cite that clip with Tim Cook claiming the US never had a consumer electronics industry. That’s total bullshit. Apple was founded on the US domestic consumer electronics industry of the 70s and 80s, Wall St & IBM race to bottom just happened starting from the mid 80s.
- Boring technology is awesome, except for PHP.
- The only reason Leetcode could be useful in real life is when your predecessor at work wrote some awful shit using the worst DSA perf-wise.
- Wait… it’s only been 100 days? Fuck…
- TIL people grow up in the 80s didn’t remember much of the Mac as it was too expensive. Most home computers were just glorified calculator/game console and BASIC REPL that didn’t even include a monitor. GUI existed, but really reached its final form by Windows 95.
- 2D tabs are the worst UI element ever invented, it’s just awfully implemented everywhere, it’s not even skeuomorphic, it’s brain dead.
- Left the mechanical keyboard scene for a couple of years, came back and found Signature Plastics changed ownership, and Cherry is moving production to China. How’s GMK doing?
- There are too many BS startup employee stock plans. They are either completely worthless or cost an arm or a leg to exercise.
- Companies like OpenAI and Meta seem to have forgotten the lesson of never piss off the most sought after group of employees at your companies or they’ll just go somewhere else.
- There’s much value in boring technology, and AI is going to make the industry stick to boring technology much faster. I don’t see it as a bad thing.
- The Keychron V1 is almost a perfect desktop keyboard. All it needs to achieve perfection is support for stepped caps lock on the PCB and a built-in USB hub.
- Gave VS Code another go for about 3 months now at my new job. It’s still just meh. Word wrap is basically useless. Tabs are useless, navigation by syntax is also meh.
- Decided to curb my buying urge for more MX style switches. To this day the only switch that makes a keyboard sound like a keyboard is still Alps SKCM style switches. Gotta save money to buy an enthusiast grade Alps board in the future.
- Just got a new batch of tactile switches to try today. The new Durock mocha, lotus and ice king are pretty good, but daaayyam the Wuque brown is phenomenally smooth and tactile stock. I think I’m going to get 10 of these to try.
- Another mechanical keyboard myth - silent switches. Just put a dap of any grade 2 lube where the stem strikes the bottom and top housing. You are welcome.
- I don’t understand how Gemini 2.5 is so good and yet Google search’s AI summary is so bad.
- I find solace in the fact that universities still call natural language processing natural language processing, and not sprinkle it with some AGI ASI mumbo jumbo.
- Another thing mechanical keyboard people really need to stop recommending is opening up switches to lube and film. Back when there were only a handful of switch choices, they were the only way mod you could do. These days, if a switch isn’t good stock, just buy another. It’s not worth the bother.
