StLSparty’s Music Video of the Day
Crime fiction fan & signed book collector. Will post a new classic music video (or equivalent) every day - I’m not searching for clicks - just grooving to the tunes
Automatically blocking every porn bot “follower” that pops into my feed
- I devoured this series and was really held by its subtleties and sharp observations about a particular generation of people (mine-ish), and about the not-niceness that lurks within the nice. This short piece (not by me) gets at some of what works so well about it.
- Are you the asshole if you refuse to support your friend’s crappy self-published novel? Maybe!
- New Press Box Chronicles takes a deep dive look at my favorite lost crazy baseball team—the 1984 San Diego Padres. www.youtube.com/watch?v=DhDd...

- Elizabeth graduates tomorrow. Today, I repost the most-read story I ever wrote about the night I took her to see Hamilton. And then, just for fun, I broke down Wednesday night’s Chicago White Sox lineup. They’re not related. (Free to read and share)
- Double your pleasure . . .

- Our Elizabeth — sorry, Liz — graduates college this week. To keep from breaking down, I’m revisiting some of the old stories I wrote about her over the years. I’ll post one each day in the Notebook. Starting, of course, with the obvious one: Katie the Prefect. 🧙🏻♀️ 🎓

- 38 years ago today, America first met #TheSimpsons! On April 19, 1987, the short "Good Night" (aka "Good Night Simpsons") first aired on The Tracey Ullman Show on Fox. Wr: Matt Groening. Animation: Wes Archer, David Silverman & Bill Kopp.
- That's grand! Revel in the moment.
- I personally don't type "The End" (or -30- or ###) and I'm not sure why!
- End of the first draft - whatever else I might change, it won’t be those two words!
- The thrill of typing THE END after your first draft is hard to top.
- That is wonderful!!! Congrats!! 😃
- Inspired by the latest episode of @pablo.show www.youtube.com/watch?v=LIH1... Fax machines were the one thing of technology I ALWAYS struggled with for some reason. Also always makes me laugh that the Jays nearly traded Jonas Hoglund but they traded was voided because the fax machine broke.....
- This was so much fun--justice for Doris!
- A joy reuniting with @minakimes.bsky.social and America’s +1, @mikegolicjr.bsky.social, to report the untold origin of an American success story (despite Hulk Hogan’s attempt to claim it): The George Foreman Grill. New PTFO Share & Tell, from LA: youtu.be/V83TzebmMGM?...
- Re-upping this for the weekend, and glad to see such response across the board.
- New blurb just dropped: “…peerless paradigm of pulp prowess.” Thanks for the delicious alliteration, @vpkeenan.bsky.social !! open.substack.com/pub/vincekee...
- Cannot wait for this. Dallas, come watch the Coen Brothers' debut film BLOOD SIMPLE on the big screen with us!
- An absolute must-listen. What happened to Ezra, and this documentary (which would have been AMAZING), is a travesty.
- New Audible: My takeaways from Indy on what was an interesting NFL Combine including the bizarre scene that was the infamous Squabble at Starbucks, plus we discuss some sanity with the ACC situation and much more: podcasts.apple.com/us/podcast/t...
- I am annoyed so I wrote a thing.
- Meet the destroyer HMS Glowworm. In April 1940 she was forced to fight the German Heavy Cruiser Admiral Hipper, ten times her size, and Hipper's destroyer escorts. Her extraordinary last stand earned her captain the first Victoria Cross of WW2. In part because THE GERMANS nominated him for one /1 🧵
- A lesser-known power of Shirley Jackson's 'The Lottery' is where it comes in its collection. Spoilers, but I suspect you know how 'The Lottery' ends. It's famous for a reason. But this is important: Jackson arranged the collection it was named after, and she chose the arrangement. 1/
- Revisiting tons of vintage Doris Day for a pod ep I'm recording soon w/ the 1 & only @meganabbott.bsky.social & midway through LOVE ME OR LEAVE ME it occurs to me that film lost so much when we lost James Cagney. Epically electric, mischievous, wide-eyed, he steals focus & keeps everyone off balance
- And I did a more FAQy thing about blurbs too in 2021 —
- For the record, I talked a little about blurbs a year or so back at ye olde blogge:
- When I heard the news about all the figure skaters on board of course I thought about the 1961 disaster:
- HEY! WE ARE WATCHING comes out on Tuesday (gulp). One day later, I will be in conversation with the great @meganabbott.bsky.social! I hope you can join us!

- This is real (at least in the US). It's not one of those stupid things where you put an idiotic statement on your FB page declaring something illegal. I just checked it on FB settings and it had a list of every website I visited recently. Fucking weird. The future kind of sucks.
- Not to pour salt into a wound, but Megan and I just agreed yesterday to do a mutual galley swap, which is like a trade-last, but even better. (Oh frabjous day, there's a Paris Review article about Betsy-Tacy and trade-lasts.) www.theparisreview.org/blog/2014/03...

- This made my morning for some reason. Thank you so much!

- Everybody thinks they know what Bourbon Street is. And they’re right! But also wrong. This Rich Campanella classic is a good starting place on why. placesjournal.org/article/hati...
- You're telling me that Margo Martindale and Wayne Knight were once partners on a team of character actors who moonlit as private investigators to supplement film/tv income by busting bad guys with their acting skills and this has never been adapted into the longest-running show on NBC?
- 1/? WWII story time. In the 90s I was part of a Danish program where high school students interviewed surviving resistance fighters and got their stories written down. Two of the men I interviewed had been part of one of the largest and most dramatic actions taken by the resistance.
