David Wearing
Assistant Professor in International Relations at the University of Sussex (own views, obviously).
Interested in British (and Western) foreign relations in the Middle East and elsewhere, and how they're shaped by legacies of colonialism.

- The latest racist spasm in UK politics would not have been complete without middlebrow white male pundits rushing to tell us all to calm down about it. The rise of fascism has been enabled at every turn by these people's pathetic incompetence and inability to name what is staring them in the face

- The advantages of pitching far-right vs pitching soft-left from the Labour leadership's point of view are that it's 1. fully consistent with appeasing the press 2. more consistent with wooing capital 3. more consistent with the centrist-reactionary ideology of the Labour leadership

It is turning down drinks with friends as you worry you can’t fulfil a basic human need if you go out. And knowing society has made the choice not to care.

- I personally would vote tactically in such a scenario and encourage others to do likewise. But one has to appreciate the profound and frankly justified revulsion that most progressives have for Labour, due to Gaza and much else. Its inevitable that (too?) many will vote accordingly or stay at home.

- The danger is that the spectacle of the entire British establishment grovelling at the feet of this neo-fascist will help mainstream his politics in the UK and push us toward the same dark path the US is on. Massive civil society resistance is vital to counteract this. It needs to be enormous.

- Reposted by David WearingBREAKING: Days after a Louisiana judge ruled that the deportation of Mahmoud Khalil can proceed, thousands are holding an emergency Passover Seder at the ICE headquarters in New York City, saying: If you come for one, you face us all.
- Some leftists need to grasp that when far right voters tell pollsters they want mass deportations and also wealth redistribution, that's not two separate parts of their brain talking. They're not secret socialists who are just kidding about the racism. They want economic benefits *for whites only*.

- Guardian quote of the reasons given by Israel. Badenoch is a hard right authoritarian who approves of states shutting down critical speech.
- Can't be many people who are obtuse enough to still take this "free speech under threat" talk at face value. At least, not outside of the Trump-Vance far right itself.
- Good and interesting article. For too long (and I say this with love as much as frustration), the Labour soft left have been Charlie Brown, the party hard right has been Lucy, and mild north European social democracy has been the football.
- The most successful economies in the rich world are in Scandinavia and East Asia, if human well-being is any measure. In those terms, the US has long been a relative basket case - one reason among many why it's now descended into fascism (which by definition cannot lead the "free world").
