I think a lot about what Carl Sagan said in one of his final interviews.
May 4, 2025 06:21And the said sceptics who interrogated the scientists and still not believed in them, fell head over heels for a pussy-grabbing Sociopathic lifetime criminal ... Now they rule a country into the fascistic gutters. How is that for starters?
Reminds me that I need to read his books.
Is the Demon Haunted World a good start ?
It's the one I have in my library.
That is one of his best quotes.
It’s ALSO a great example of why scientific literacy is a problem. My personal opinion on that is that we need to get rid of the gatekeep-y elements of it. Deliberately get rid of the word roots that people who aren’t versed in Latin and Greek roots can’t decode.
Basically remove all the fluff and barriers towards true literacy in English. We can strike a balance with specific taxonomic and linguistic meaning and understandability.

Again, the central issue destroying America that all of us on here know, as well as the rest of the world…the ignorance of a large portion of the American public…the key to survival will be the answer to this issue…if one exists.

Carl Sagan's Final Warning on the Importance of Scientific Skepticism
"It's a thing that Jefferson lay great stress on," Sagan explained. "It wasn't enough, he said, to enshrine some rights in the Constitution and the Bill or Rights; the people had to be educated and th...

Agreed. Also:
These days, people are trading freedom for security. Along with the freedoms, out goes the inquisitive nature imbued in personal responsibility.
Take iPhone, for example. So easy and secure, we don't have to think about how a feature works. It's the "don't think" that is gone related to science.
Yesterday I saw a video of RFK Jr explaining to a small crowd that the party drug "poppers" is the true cause of AIDS. Not a virus.
I mean, where are we at here??? Many know what I mean. All this is disorienting. Stay focused. Reiki the phuck outta your energies. Protection. Stay calm. Determined.
It was obvious long before he was born.
Yep that’s exactly how we ended up with Liberals
The charlatans have co-opted the word “scepticism” to mean “don’t believe what scientists tell you, this rando on YouTube has the true secrets they don’t want you to know”
People in the scientific community like Sagan often saw the decline in science literacy before we did because they were looking at it. He was a great science communicator. The Dunning-Kruger is strong in too many these days.
I remember reading “The Demon-Haunted World” when it came out - I was probably 14 at the time - and I’ve probably had more reason to keep coming back to it than any other book I read in that decade.
Raise a glass to the skeptics !
He hit the nail on the head. Said something similarly prophetic in ‘The Demon-Haunted World’.

Do find it interesting that the only charlatans are political or religious. Pretty sure there are a fair few in the scientific community.
Always reminds me of Sagan's house next to Ithaca Falls when he was a prof at Cornell.
