To see why destroying the US science enterprise is so detrimental to the world, we have to realize that the US spends more on research and development than any other country in the world (by far), and if we remove China and Japan, the US spends almost as much as ALL other countries combined.

Wow Russia is so far down. They used to keep up with the US on science at some point. That's just sad.
If you factor in local costs of goods and services, China spends more than the US on research - MUCH more. The PPP multiplier for China relative to the US is 3.64.
My only question is whether “dollars spent” is a completely meaningful metric. We spend money on education and healthcare, much of which is lost to administrative bloat as well as other areas of bloat. I would strongly suspect there is R&D bloat too but I’m happy to be shown that it isn’t the case.
Big country spends big amounts…. Better make this graph per capita. This doesn’t say that much.
