the govt obviously has abused this information in the past. they’ve been far from perfect stewards. but so much of the info we give is given with the expectation that it will be used to power a govt that offers services to citizens (health data for research, financial info for taxes & benefits)
but that part of the bargain (however good or bad you think it is) seems like it’s over or has at least changed. your data works for trump now. for musk. in service of their political project. to help those they like and enact vengeance on their enemies.
what will stay with me the most is this quote. institutions are based on trust. if this data is continually used against the ppl who trusted the govt enough to comply & give it to them, the contract is breached. if you were creating a program to further hurt trust in govt it would look like this.
