27 years ago today, Kerry Wood struck out 20 🔥
(📸: Cubs)
May 6, 2025 14:47I remember it. Six years ago though, tops.
For one afternoon , Kerry Wood was the greatest pitcher who ever lived.
There were less than 100 signed and framed photos- mine is still hanging in my apartment
I was there. Still have the ticket stubs. Took the day off of work and brought my four year old son to the game. He is still a big cubs fan, it’s in our genes. It’s also the day he learned that if you raise your hand and shout they bring you ice cream, popcorn and peanuts.
So many just frozen watching their third strike
Jeff Bagwell's stance instantly causing me to time travel to 1996
It's weird..I can't remember why I went into the kitchen a few minutes ago but I remember where I was when I watched this game on I believe WGN at the time.
Saw the last few innings live on tv. I have never seen MLB hitters so befuddled as they did on that day.
Damn that breaking ball was thaaaa shit!!
According to Bill James’ Game Score system, the best pitching performance of all time.
I was at that game! Go Cubs Go!
Not even a cub fan. But I remember watching every second of this game!! Wood was epic!!
The break on #19...
That's what you call electric stuff.
I was in college. One of my roommates and I decided to go and day drink at a bar since we didn’t have class. Picked a hell of a day to do so.
I was 10 years old and I remember watching that game from start to finish. I didn’t realize that then how amazing that was.
Wow time flies.
More rare than a perfect game.
I watched this game when it aired!
Probably Chip & Steve calling the game,
Sosa still working on his discipline at the plate.
His injury was another sad loss to sports,
like Bo Jackson or Derrick Rose.
So many strikeouts that my screen tried going to sleep while I was watching.
We coulda used some of that mojo tonight.
Watch it started b4 midnight so it was 27 years ago
Nowadays, hard to strike out 20 when no one pitches past the 6th inning.
...and he wasn't matched up against a bad expansion team, he faced some real good hitters that day and they just stood there with no answers whatsoever. Will never forget it.
💙 the 🐻s!
Go Cubbies!
I did not witness this feat, but wish I had
I never watched the Cubs but for some reason when I got home from school that day I decided to watch the Cubs. Then a few years later I decided to go to the bar and watch the Brewers game, something I rarely did, Ben Sheets struck out 18 that day.
It was much more. Wood gave up only 1 base runner: Ricky Gutiérrez reached on a bang-bang infield single. If Gutiérrez hadn’t beat that out, Wood mighta pitched a perfect game with 19 strikeouts. There would have been a good argument for that being the greatest pitching performance ever.
🔥He was one of my favorite players! ☺️
Look at that record! Look at that ERA! We didn’t see this coming.
Nasty stuff
#19 was wicked!
Coulda had a Maddux like career without the injuries.
Those “steroid era” players somehow look way less bulky than players today.
Filthy

Absolutely boooooooooring sport 🤔😴zzZZZz
Probably the best stuff I've ever seen a guy have on TV
Saw it on tv...what a pitching exhibition!!!
Maybe the best-pitched game ever.
🤯
No one else would do it, but Kerry Wood.
Vividly recall watching this realtime. Probably the most dominant performance I’ve ever seen.
That catcher is almost sitting on the ground he's squatting so deep
Braves fan here. He whipped us pretty good too
Oh man I remember that game. Masterful.
I remember watching him do it
That was awesome to watch!!🩷⚾️
Kid could cook. Until he was cooked🫤
It was awesome! I got to watch that game. He was a pleasure to behold.
Awesome 👌
What a legend!

I was in college and missed class to keep watching.
KW was the Shiznick back in the day.
Assume that is a record?
And then went on to steal rookie of the year from Todd Helton
