1989: The student occupation of Tiananmen Square begins.
1985: The Philadelphia Police Department drops explosives from a State Police helicopter on the roof of a row house occupied by black liberation group MOVE, after a shootout between MOVE members and police.
May 13, 2025 18:24The explosives start a fire destroying the MOVE house, killing eleven people (six adults and five children). The fire spread to surrounding buildings as firefighters were ordered aay by police who claimed gunfire from the MOVE house (possibly just ammunition cooking off).
The fire eventually destroyed 61 buildings, leaving 250 people homeless.
1981: Mehmet Ali Ağca, a member of the Turkish right-wing group Grey Wolves, attemps to assassinate Pope John Paul II in St. Peter's Square.
1960: UC Berkeley students stage a mass protest in San Francisco agains hearings
being held by the House Committee on Un-American Activities. SFPD responded in typical fashion, turning fire hoses on the protestors and dragging people out of the building by their feet so their heads would bounce on the stairs. This is the first of a long series of '60s protests from Cal.
