The whole sorry episode has gotten me thinking about “passing” for that is what this boils down to.
The visible immigrant, by colour or culture, as opposed to the ones who “conform”.

Yes. As an immigrant, my solidarity is with everyone from the immigrant diaspora. The bar for my integration was pretty low and I still had plenty of times feeling like I didn’t/couldn’t/wouldn’t fit. To be told you *shouldn’t* fit, will never fit, grinds away more pieces of yourself.
