- In the end, more characters survived than I expected to, and there were moments like learning that Nemik's manifesto is out there. But I still sobbed really hard at the end because of what comes next.
- For the 🦀 feed because I aspire to being an imp
- I had to double-check if I'd already bought this, because if I'd read a library copy I wanted to get my own, but nope, I already did!
- The ebook of my first novel, last year's Nebula and Ignyte-winning, Le Guin and Hugo-nominated THE SAINT OF BRIGHT DOORS, is on sale at $2.99 right now across most ebook retailers! If you were holding out for a really good deal 👉🏾👉🏾 bookshop.org/p/books/the-...
- I've already quoted this once, but I'm doing it again because I think I figured out why it makes me so angry - It's an encapsulation of how progressive/leftish obsession with Palestine damages resistance to the very real, very present threats of fascism right here and now in the US.

- Oh absolutely, and I also think there are other parallels to Israel and Palestine that do exist and weren't noticed by penitent but I don't think they're what matters, I think your original point is much more important.
- Screw your favorite book, which was the first that upset you? A Wrinkle in Time was mine. The possessed baby scared the everloving shit out of me. My babysitter had to call my mom to come home early because I was hysterical.

- Oh, Baleful Beasts and Eerie Creatueres? I'm scared to re-read it.
- Oh, it was an anthology of horror stories for kids (pre-Goosebumps, mid to late 70's) that had a magician who's "sawing his assistant in half" trick turned out to be very real. My parents didn't know about that one. However, a couple of months later...
- I read a collection of urban legends that had the one with the babysitter and the call coming from inside the house, and my mother got a prank call one night with the guy saying he was watching her. We lived miles from anyone and my bedroom was in the basment, which also had a phone extension.
- I slept upstairs for at least a week.

- Oh god, you've really encapsulated how I feel about it. There are parts of it that border on good, but that it exists at all is such a bad thing.
- Sorry, the snark is not meant for you or jsx, but penitent.
- But to go back to jsx's main point, this reminds me of the irritation caused by "comps" escaping containment. People will review books by comparing the actions of individual characters to their comps analogy, and THAT'S NOT HOW IT'S SUPPOSED TO WORK.
- Also "the Ghorman massacre" (though not many details) has been part of Star Wars lore for many years as a trigger point for Mothma and Organa, and Gilroy mentioned it in 2022.
- I don't want to be like the asshole I saw the other day who was like, "How do you not know this?", but... this is Star Wars. If you're going to pontificate about it maybe consider opening Wookiepedia.
- I thought I had seen the hosedrinkingest of takes but “kids these days aren’t traumatized ENOUGH” is a new one.

- There are certain "great books" that I wasn't forced to read but kind of thought I should at some point. As I've gotten older I've realized I don't actually have to do that to myself, and 'Catcher in the Rye' is a prime example.

- Well, it's implied that the cannibalism may actually have supernatural-level restorative properties, but mostly it's just the horror of the cannibalism itself.
- 🤬 We need to step putting men in positions of authority or responsibility, shit like this keeps happening too often. www.haaretz.com/world-news/2...

- Sir, did the person who picked this out for you pick more than one of the same style? Because even allowing for lighting differences I don't think that's the same shirt as the one up top. But they're both fine colors!

- A few weeks back there was a "Why does everyone hate Will Stancil?" skeet that had some legs, with what were to me a surprising amount of replies agreeing with the OP. I stayed out of it because that's not a sport I excel at, but C'MON!
- Apparently Stancil has shooters and I was laid off so I’m starting a Patreon at least until I can find another job. Feel free to support if you can. Or don’t. We’ll still be here. www.patreon.com/TheLouvreofB...

- I'm also clocking the part where she says she's not from the US and wondering how likely it is that she'll run into problems trying to attend.
- As far as the rest of it, I grew up with my dad working 1 week on/1 week off on an offshore oil platform, so I am super chill about celebrating things strictly according to the calendar.

- Wow, I went to her profile and it got worse and worse. In her profile pic she's wearing a Hamsa pendant while throwing around antisemitc tropes, and was recently engaged in a lengthy "cis women have it worse than trans women because you were born men" tirade.
- Fuck everyone who thinks like this and feels no shame about it. If YOU had been willing to actually put up with being socially isolated and lonely a bit longer then at-risk people wouldn't still be expected to live like this.

- My mother was not a good cook. Sometimes she would make me what we called "Spam soup" with Spam, chicken bouillon, and elbow macaroni. As a kid I genuinely enjoyed it, but as an adult I know it's nothing to brag about!

- I used to find it shocking, but they wore that out of me.
- That would require them to understand that Judaism isn't just Xtianity without Jesus, and in order to learn that they'd first have to believe they owe anybody who thinks differently than they do common respect.
- Had a chat with my rabbi this morning where I stopped biting my tongue for a few minutes to push back on the idea that Palestinians and their supporters have to stop using "From the river to the sea", because it scares Jews.

View full threadI cannot abide a slogan calling for liberation having been allowed to be twisted for so long without meaningful pushback. I personally find it about as threatening as sharing a public restroom with a trans woman.
- I try to respect the fear that's genuinely felt by some, particularly when it's tangled up with reasonable fears, but eventually I have to push back when it's based on lies.
- Among the things I said were that eventually Jews were going to have to accept that they've been lied to about a lot of things, and that the so-called original violent intent of that slogan is one of them. I also don't agree that it's a dog whistle.
- I tried to explain my analogy of Jews being like white or cis women, but I don't think I stuck the landing. That people can both exist at positions of privilege and oppression sure (not new to him), but not how they can wield their oppression like a weapon, and how often it's expressed as fear.

- It's because of that especially fucked up branch of Evengelical Xtianity that wants all Jews to move to Israel and then convert or die in order to fulfill their End Times fantasies.

- Do tell me of your detailed understanding of Jewishness.
- A Messianic Jewish activist who pretended to be Muslim and said he was concerned about Islamophobia met undercover over the last month with Muslim professors at the U. of Florida — including its new Teacher of the Year — trying to goad them into making anti-Israel statements to use against them.

- Chad never said he was Jewish. You're literally arguing about something that never happened.

- Nope. Jewishness is like citizenship. You can be an enthusiastic citizen or an apathetic one, but you're a citizen unless you voluntarily give up your citizenship, which is what converting is. He may still have Jewish heritage, but he isn't Jewish.

- That's a good point.
- 'Taken' also exploited the whole human trafficking thing, but it didn't let his daughter actually get raped and murdered. Like, I still would have been grossed out by the racism, but that was a helluva statement on what they thought their audience would accept.
- You are right about the comparison to movies like the original 'Death Wish' movie and its ilk in that respect - horrible fridging to motivate the men. Somewhere in me I have a Take about those movies and how they lined up with Wayne LaPierre and his buddies taking over the NRA.

View full threadShe just really didn't seem like that until she had a national spotlight! (Though people who lived under her as mayor tried to warn us.) She'd made a fuss about the state GOP chairman acting unethically when they were both on the Oil and Gas Conservation Commission, which I thought was impressive.
- The sitting governor she primaried really was a bad guy who deserved to get primaried, but wow, the repercussions!
- Based on your description I thought it might be something I'd find value in (I like 'Death Sentence' with Kevin Bacon and the first movie version of 'Man on Fire' with Scott Glenn), but the racism and brutalization of female characters was too much for me.
- (My horse isn't too high, I still like the Tony Scott 'Man on Fire' too.) But I agree that Stallone manages to be a less smug action hero, and I've kind of enjoyed some of his B movies because of it.

- I picked the GOP primary ballot once in an attempt to do similar harm reduction. Unfortunately I have to live with knowing my choice that day helped make Sarah Palin a national figure. 🤦🏻♀️ Sometimes hindsight is quite painful.
