Self-identifying as a centrist is perhaps the most cynical and amoral political identity you can have because you're just openly admitting your beliefs aren't really beliefs they're just strategic positions that only exist relative to others in the room you happen to be in
So, your position is the only "real" political orientation? You see, this is why you ultimately lose. Dismissing a possible coalition in light of rigid dogma.
This is also why the left loses support from its own adherents in favor of getting policy in place instead of yelling impotently.
