Under the current constitution, the Supreme Court and Congress are supposed to be responsible for checking the power of a president.
Both institutions have failed to do so. Perhaps it’s worth considering if it’s not merely the individuals who have failed to prevent tyranny, but the system itself.
On the one hand, the leaders of the Supreme Court and both parties in Congress have abdicated their constitutional responsibility to stop tyranny.
On the other hand, our system of checks and balances is woefully outdated and does not channel the majority, or limit an authoritarian minority.
And voters are really dumb and bad about who they elect (I say that as a Californian who votes Democrat)
