- The Kaiser Friedrich was a liner built for Norddeutscher Lloyd in an attempt to capture the Blue Riband from HAPAG. She was a beautiful ship, but never performed to expectations. She briefly served in both the NDL and HAPAG fleets before being mothballed for a decade. (1/2) #MaritimeHistory🧵
- The Cairo, a City class ironclad river gunboat, completed in 1861. She was the first ironclad to be sunk by a mine when one exploded under her in the Yazoo River on December 12, 1862. Parts of the boat were salvaged and preserved near the Vicksburg National Cemetery. #NavalHistory
